The Exumas and Eleuthera offer two very different ways to experience the Bahamas by yacht.

The Exumas are an island-hopping paradise. Hundreds of cays, shallow turquoise banks, remote anchorages and short passages make the journey itself the main attraction.

Eleuthera is different. Rather than hundreds of small islands, it is a long, narrow island lined with beaches, historic settlements and dramatically contrasting Atlantic and Caribbean coastlines. Nearby Harbour Island and Spanish Wells add another dimension to the cruising area.

If this is your first Bahamas yacht charter, the Exumas will usually be the better choice. But for guests looking for beautiful beaches, quieter cruising and more time exploring ashore, Eleuthera can be just as rewarding.

If the image in your mind is a yacht anchored alone beside a white sandbar surrounded by impossibly turquoise water, you are probably imagining the Exumas.

The Exuma chain stretches southeast through the central Bahamas and contains hundreds of islands and cays. Unlike destinations built around one major harbour or coastline, the Exumas are naturally suited to moving by yacht.

You may spend the morning at one island, cruise an hour or two after lunch and anchor somewhere completely different before sunset.

That constant movement between cays is what makes the Exumas one of the most popular yacht charter areas in the Bahamas.

Eleuthera offers a more linear cruising experience.

The island stretches for roughly 100 miles from north to south while remaining remarkably narrow in many places. Its Atlantic coast can feel wild and dramatic, while the western side facing the Great Bahama Bank and Exuma Sound is generally calmer.

Instead of visiting dozens of tiny cays, an Eleuthera yacht charter tends to revolve around a smaller number of substantial destinations.

These can include Cape Eleuthera, Governor's Harbour, Current Island, Spanish Wells, North Eleuthera and Harbour Island.

Eleuthera also has established marinas and ports at different points along the island, including facilities around Spanish Wells, Governor's Harbour and southern Eleuthera.

The result is a charter that feels less like an expedition through remote cays and more like a journey along one of the Bahamas' most interesting islands.

One major reason to choose Eleuthera is Harbour Island.

Located just off northern Eleuthera, Harbour Island is famous for Pink Sands Beach, but its appeal goes beyond the beach.

Dunmore Town offers colourful colonial architecture, restaurants, boutiques and a more polished atmosphere than you will find in most of the Exuma Cays.

This gives an Eleuthera itinerary a particularly attractive balance.

You can spend one night anchored somewhere quiet and remote, then arrive at Harbour Island the following day for restaurants, beach clubs and time ashore.

The Exumas generally cannot match that combination.

This is closer than it might appear.

The Exumas

The Exumas win for small secluded beaches, sandbars and extraordinary water colour.

Many of the best beaches are accessible only by boat, which is actually an advantage when you are travelling by yacht. A beach that would be difficult for a hotel guest to reach may be directly outside your anchorage.

Some areas consist of little more than white sand surrounded by shallow turquoise water.

Eleuthera

Eleuthera wins for long, dramatic beaches.

Its extensive coastline includes beaches on both the Atlantic and more sheltered western sides. Nearby Harbour Island adds the famous Pink Sands Beach, one of the best-known beaches in the Bahamas.

Eleuthera's beaches also tend to offer greater variety, from protected coves to long Atlantic strands.

Winner: It Depends

Choose the Exumas for sandbars, deserted coves and beaches reached directly from your yacht.

Choose Eleuthera for long beaches, pink sand and more varied coastline.

For sheer visual impact, the Exumas win.

The shallow Bahamas Banks surrounding many of the Exuma Cays create the extraordinary turquoise water that has made this part of the Bahamas famous.

The scenery constantly changes as depth, sand and tides alter the colour beneath the yacht.

Eleuthera also has exceptionally clear Bahamian water, but its coastline includes deeper sections and more exposure to the Atlantic.

If your priority is spending a week surrounded by shallow turquoise water, the Exumas are difficult to beat.

Both can be excellent, but the experience is different.

In the Exumas, many of the best snorkeling locations are reached directly by yacht or tender. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is particularly important for marine life because of its protected status.

Eleuthera offers good snorkeling along its coastline and can be particularly appealing to guests who enjoy entering the water directly from beaches or shallow coastal areas.

For a yacht charter, however, the Exumas have the advantage because so much of their best snorkeling naturally fits into an island-hopping itinerary.

Especially for guests who want to combine snorkeling with short cruises between multiple islands.

Here, Eleuthera wins comfortably.

The Exumas have small settlements such as Staniel Cay and Black Point, but much of the attraction is wilderness.

Eleuthera has more substantial communities and considerably more to explore on land.

The island's long, narrow geography also means it can be interesting to explore parts of Eleuthera by car while your yacht relocates farther along the coast.

That gives you something the Exumas cannot really replicate.

Neither destination should be chosen primarily for nightlife.

This is the Out Islands, not Nassau.

However, Eleuthera has the advantage for restaurants and evenings ashore, particularly when Harbour Island is included.

Harbour Island offers sophisticated restaurants, hotels and bars, while Governor's Harbour also has several good dining options.

The Exumas have memorable places to eat and drink around islands such as Staniel Cay, but options become increasingly limited as you move between remote cays.

For guests who enjoy alternating between quiet anchorages and evenings ashore.

The Exumas win, although both destinations can feel wonderfully remote.

There are simply so many cays in the Exumas that finding quiet anchorages is part of the experience.

Some islands are completely undeveloped. Others contain little more than a beach or a narrow strip of vegetation.

Eleuthera is hardly crowded, particularly away from Harbour Island, but you are generally cruising along an inhabited island rather than moving through a huge archipelago of uninhabited cays.

For a true escape-from-everything feeling, choose the Exumas.

Again, the Exumas.

The geography of the island chain creates an enormous variety of anchorages, mooring fields and sheltered areas.

You can often travel relatively short distances between overnight stops, which makes the Exumas ideal for guests who prefer to spend more time swimming and relaxing and less time completing long passages.

Eleuthera's anchorages are more spread out because of the island's length.

This does not make Eleuthera a poor cruising destination. It simply creates a different itinerary rhythm.

Particularly for catamarans and guests who love anchoring somewhere new every evening.

Your preferred yacht type may influence your decision.

Catamarans in the Exumas

The Exumas are almost tailor-made for catamarans.

Their relatively shallow draft allows them to access areas that can be more restrictive for deeper-draft yachts. Large deck areas and easy water access also suit a charter focused heavily on swimming, paddleboarding, snorkeling and beach exploration.

Sailing catamarans work particularly well because many passages between neighbouring cays are relatively short.

Motor Yachts in Eleuthera

Motor yachts are especially attractive for Eleuthera because distances between major stops can be longer.

Greater cruising speed makes it easier to move between southern Eleuthera, Governor's Harbour and the northern part of the island without using too much of the day.

Larger motor yachts also work well for itineraries combining Eleuthera and the Exumas, where longer passages become necessary. A combined seven-day itinerary can cover roughly 240 nautical miles and is considerably better suited to a faster motor yacht than a relaxed sailing itinerary.

That said, both types of yachts can cruise either destination.

For most families, I would choose the Exumas.

Short cruising distances, calm shallow water, beaches and constant activities make the area extremely easy to enjoy with children.

The itinerary can include swimming pigs one day, nurse sharks the next, followed by snorkeling, paddleboarding or a beach picnic.

Children do not need to wait several days for the main attraction. Something interesting happens almost every day.

Eleuthera is also family-friendly, particularly for families who enjoy beaches and exploring ashore, but the Exumas generally provide more variety from the yacht itself.

This depends entirely on the type of charter you want.

The Exumas are perfect for couples seeking privacy, empty beaches and romantic anchorages.

Eleuthera adds a little more sophistication.

A charter that combines secluded anchorages with dinner on Harbour Island, a day at Pink Sands Beach and an evening in Governor's Harbour can work exceptionally well for couples.

Exumas for privacy and seclusion. Eleuthera for romance mixed with restaurants and time ashore.

For most people, the Exumas.

They deliver the Bahamas yacht-charter experience people tend to imagine before they arrive.

Turquoise water. Sandbars. Tiny islands. Swimming pigs. Snorkeling. Short passages. Remote beaches.

Eleuthera is arguably more rewarding for guests who have already visited the Exumas and want to see another side of the Bahamas.

Even yacht-charter specialists commonly characterize the Exumas as the classic multi-stop Bahamas itinerary, while Eleuthera provides a slower trip focused around fewer standout destinations.

Yes, and on the right yacht it can make an excellent itinerary.

A faster motor yacht departing Nassau can cruise south through part of the Exumas before crossing toward Eleuthera.

For example:

Nassau → Highbourne Cay → Norman's Cay → Warderick Wells → Staniel Cay → South Eleuthera → Governor's Harbour → Harbour Island → Nassau

The advantage is variety.

You get the turquoise cays and remote anchorages of the Exumas followed by the beaches, settlements and restaurants of Eleuthera.

The disadvantage is distance.

A combined itinerary involves substantially more cruising than spending the entire week in one area. For this reason, a fast motor yacht or a charter longer than seven days usually makes the combination more enjoyable.

If you only have seven days and this is your first Bahamas charter, choose the Exumas.

The short distances between many of the cays make it possible to create a varied itinerary without feeling rushed.

Eleuthera can also work perfectly well over seven days, particularly if you want a slower itinerary focused on selected destinations such as Governor's Harbour, Spanish Wells and Harbour Island.

But trying to explore both areas comprehensively in one week can create unnecessary cruising time.

With seven days, depth is often better than distance.

Eleuthera offers something the Exumas cannot: a genuine island journey.

Instead of moving between tiny cays, you follow a long coastline where pink beaches, small settlements, dramatic scenery and Harbour Island provide reasons to step ashore.

For your first Bahamas yacht charter, choose the Exumas.

For a different, quieter and slightly more sophisticated Bahamas experience, choose Eleuthera.

And if you have enough time and the right motor yacht, combine them and experience both.
