Hope Town Yacht Charter: Lighthouse, Historic Harbour & Abaco Charm

Located on Elbow Cay overlooking the protected Sea of Abaco, Hope Town is one of the most iconic yacht charter destinations in the Bahamas. Pastel-colored Loyalist cottages line narrow streets around a sheltered natural harbour, while the red-and-white Elbow Reef Lighthouse rises across the water as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the entire Abacos.

Founded in 1785 by British Loyalists, Hope Town has preserved much of its historic character despite becoming one of the region's most desirable cruising stops. Cars and golf carts are prohibited within the old village center, allowing guests to explore its waterfront restaurants, boutiques, churches, historic homes, and small museums on foot or by bicycle.

For yacht guests, Hope Town offers an exceptional balance between shoreside atmosphere and relaxed Abaco cruising. Spend the morning walking through the village, cross the harbour to climb the lighthouse, snorkel from the Atlantic beach, then return to the yacht before continuing toward Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay, Tahiti Beach, or Lubbers Quarters Cay.

Hope Town Harbour is entered from the Sea of Abaco through a narrow and relatively shallow entrance channel. The harbour entrance can accommodate only limited opposing traffic, and cruising guidance recommends approaching cautiously and, for deeper-draft vessels, considering the state of the tide. Current charts, depth monitoring, good visibility, and local information should always be used.

Once inside, the harbour carries approximately 8 to 14 feet of water through much of the mooring area, although individual marina approaches can be shallower. Hope Town Inn & Marina currently reports approximately 6 feet at mean low water and accommodates vessels up to around 125 feet. Larger or deeper-draft yachts may therefore remain outside the harbour and use tenders for access to town.

Hope Town Harbour is primarily a mooring harbour rather than an anchorage. The basin is densely occupied by established moorings, leaving effectively no suitable room to safely anchor inside. The mooring field offers excellent protection and immediate dinghy access to both the village and the western side of the harbour.

Yachts that cannot enter the harbour can remain outside in suitable conditions, particularly around Lighthouse Bay on the Sea of Abaco side, and transfer guests ashore by tender. Conditions outside are much more dependent on wind direction and sea state, so the captain will determine whether an exterior anchorage, harbour mooring, or marina berth is the most appropriate option.

Hope Town was established in 1785 and remains one of the best-preserved Loyalist settlements in the Bahamas. The Wyannie Malone Historical Museum documents the community's history through photographs, documents, artifacts, and memorabilia, while the surrounding village preserves numerous examples of traditional pastel-painted Loyalist architecture.

The defining landmark is the 89-foot Elbow Reef Lighthouse, built during the 1860s and still operated using its historic kerosene-burning system. Visitors can climb 101 steps toward the top when the lighthouse is open, with panoramic views across Hope Town Harbour, Elbow Cay, and the Sea of Abaco.
