Elbow Cay Yacht Charter: Beaches, Harbours & Classic Abaco Charm
Elbow Cay is a charter location in The Abacos, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Elbow Cay Charter Guide
Located just across the Sea of Abaco from Marsh Harbour, Elbow Cay is one of the most iconic yacht charter destinations in the Abacos. The long, narrow island combines sheltered harbours, Atlantic beaches, colonial architecture, waterfront restaurants, and the unmistakable red-and-white Elbow Reef Lighthouse. Hope Town is the island's principal settlement, but Elbow Cay extends well beyond the village into quieter residential areas, secluded coves, and beautiful southern beaches.
The island's geography makes it particularly attractive by yacht. The western shore faces the protected Sea of Abaco, while the eastern coastline opens directly onto the Atlantic, allowing guests to move between calm swimming water and more dramatic ocean beaches within minutes. Farther south, White Sound and Tahiti Beach provide some of the cay's most relaxed cruising and anchoring environments.
Elbow Cay is also ideally positioned for island hopping. Man-O-War Cay lies to the north, Lubbers Quarters Cay sits just offshore to the southwest, and Tilloo Cay continues the chain southward. From a yacht based around Elbow Cay, guests can comfortably explore several of the central Abacos without spending much of the day underway.
Elbow Cay Navigation
Yachts generally approach Elbow Cay from the Sea of Abaco, with Hope Town Harbour and White Sound providing the two principal protected destinations. Hope Town's entrance is narrow and relatively shallow, and local cruising information recommends particular caution with traffic and tide. The harbour itself carries roughly 8 to 14 feet in the mooring area, but access conditions can be more restrictive at the entrance.
Farther south, White Sound provides another useful access point for visiting yachts, while the waters around Tahiti Beach and the southern tip of Elbow Cay become increasingly shallow. As elsewhere in the Abacos, captains should rely on current charts, visual navigation, tide information, and local knowledge, particularly when approaching close to shore or moving between Elbow Cay and Lubbers Quarters Cay.
Elbow Cay Anchorage
Hope Town Harbour is dominated by a dense mooring field rather than conventional anchoring, with little room to safely drop an anchor inside. The harbour offers excellent protection once secured to an appropriate mooring and provides immediate tender access to Hope Town, the lighthouse, restaurants, shops, and beaches. Larger yachts or vessels that prefer to remain outside can use Lighthouse Bay in suitable easterly conditions, where sandy patches provide good holding and excellent views toward the lighthouse.
Farther south, Aunt Pat's Bay and the Tahiti Beach area provide attractive alternatives. Aunt Pat's Bay carries approximately 5 to 7 feet of water with good sandy holding and is only a short tender ride from Tahiti Beach and White Sound. The area is well protected in many easterly conditions, although regular yacht and tender traffic can create wakes during the day.
Elbow Cay General Information
Elbow Cay is best known for historic Hope Town and the Elbow Reef Lighthouse, but the island offers much more beyond its northern settlement. Golf carts and bicycles make it easy to explore the coastline, with restaurants, small resorts, marinas, beaches, and residential communities extending south toward White Sound and Tahiti Beach. Hope Town itself preserves strong Loyalist character and dates back to 1785.
At the southern tip, Tahiti Beach is one of the island's signature natural attractions. Its palm-lined white sand curves into calm, shallow water, and at low tide a long sandbar emerges into the Sea of Abaco. The beach is accessible by boat, bicycle, or on foot, making it particularly convenient for yacht guests.
