Acklins Island: Bonefish Flats, Lucayan History and Untouched Southern Bahamas Cruising

Acklins Island is one of the most untouched yacht charter destinations in the Southern Bahamas, a long, sparsely populated island surrounded by coral reefs, deserted beaches and vast expanses of shallow turquoise water. Together with Crooked Island and Long Cay, Acklins curves around the immense Bight of Acklins, creating an isolated cruising region where fishing, snorkeling and exploration take priority over resorts and nightlife.

The island is particularly famous for bonefishing. The enormous flats of the Bight of Acklins extend for miles through exceptionally shallow water, creating some of the finest conditions in The Bahamas for stalking bonefish by skiff. Offshore reefs add snorkeling and diving opportunities, while the remote coastline offers beaches where yacht charter guests may spend an entire afternoon without seeing another visitor.

Acklins also has a fascinating history that reaches far beyond modern settlement. Pompey Bay Beach, south of Spring Point, contains the remains of what is considered one of the largest known Lucayan settlements in The Bahamas. Elsewhere, limestone caves, historic ruins and tiny communities such as Lovely Bay, Chester's and Salina Point give the island a character that rewards slow exploration both by yacht and ashore.

Cruising around Acklins requires careful planning because much of the surrounding water is extremely shallow. The Bight of Acklins forms an enormous lagoon between Acklins, Crooked Island and Long Cay, but Waterway Guide notes that much of the bight is beyond the practical reach of most cruising vessels. Larger charter yachts generally remain in suitable deeper water while tenders and shallow-draft skiffs explore the interior flats, creeks and beaches.

The island has little conventional marina infrastructure, so good daylight, current charts and careful depth monitoring are particularly important when approaching unfamiliar bays. Spring Point is the main population center on the western coast, while Atwood Harbour provides another recognized yacht stop farther north. The surrounding reefs and isolated coral heads make conservative route planning essential, especially for deeper-draft vessels.

Atwood Harbour is one of the most useful anchorages around Acklins. Despite its name, it is more accurately a crescent-shaped bay than an enclosed harbour. Waterway Guide reports depths of approximately 8 to 12 feet with good holding in sand. Coral lies within the harbour area, so yachts should enter carefully and select a clear sandy position. The anchorage is exposed from northwest through north.

Farther south, Jamaica Bay offers another established anchorage with approximately 6 to 8 feet of water and generally good holding in sand and grass. Deeper vessels can remain farther offshore near Jamaica Wells Point in around 9 feet. Like many anchorages in this remote region, it remains weather dependent and is exposed from northwest through north, so captains should plan overnight stops around the forecast.

Spring Point is the capital and main population center of Acklins, as well as the location of Spring Point Airport, which connects the island with Nassau and neighboring islands. Acklins remains remarkably undeveloped, and its small settlements are spread along a long coastline from Chester's in the north to Salina Point in the south.

The island also has several distinctive cultural and natural features. Cascarilla bark, traditionally used in Bahamian bush medicine and as an ingredient in Campari, is harvested on Acklins, while caves around Atwood Harbour and Jumbey Hole preserve evidence of the island's limestone geology and Lucayan past. Combined with Pompey Bay's archaeological sites and the enormous bonefish flats of the Bight, these attractions make Acklins much more than simply a remote anchorage.
