Dean's Blue Hole: The 663-Foot Abyss of Long Island

Bahamas Long Island Dean's Blue Hole

Dean's Blue Hole is a charter location in Southern Out Islands, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Dean's Blue Hole Charter Guide

Dean's Blue Hole is one of the most extraordinary natural attractions in The Bahamas, plunging 663 feet beneath the turquoise waters of Long Island. Located in a sheltered bay west of Clarence Town, the immense marine sinkhole is currently recognized by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism as the third-deepest blue hole in the world. Its dark sapphire center, brilliant shallows and surrounding white-sand beach create one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Southern Out Islands.

The blue hole sits inside a natural limestone amphitheater enclosed on three sides by rocky cliffs and on the fourth by a shallow lagoon and powdery beach. At the surface, the opening is approximately 30 meters across, but below roughly 20 meters it expands into an enormous underwater cavern reaching around 100 meters in diameter. The sudden transition from pale turquoise shallows to seemingly bottomless blue is what gives Dean's Blue Hole its unmistakable appearance.

For yacht charter guests, Dean's Blue Hole is one of the essential stops on Long Island. Swimming and snorkeling are possible directly from the beach, while experienced divers and freedivers come from around the world to explore its extraordinary depth. The annual Vertical Blue competition has helped establish Dean's Blue Hole as one of the world's most famous freediving locations, while the protected cove also makes it enjoyable for guests who simply want to swim, snorkel or relax on the sand.

Dean's Blue Hole Navigation

Dean's Blue Hole is a natural attraction rather than a conventional yacht harbour. The blue hole itself lies immediately beside the shoreline within a shallow coastal lagoon, so larger yachts should not attempt to approach the inner swimming area. Instead, charter yachts can remain in suitable deeper water while guests continue toward the beach by tender. Yacht charter guidance specifically recommends tender access for visiting superyacht guests.

The surrounding Long Island coastline requires the same careful navigation found throughout the Southern Out Islands. Shallow sand, reef structures and changing depths make good daylight particularly valuable when approaching unfamiliar coastal water. Dean's Blue Hole lies only a few miles west of Clarence Town and approximately 13 kilometers south of Deadman's Cay Airport, making it equally accessible as a yacht excursion or by road from elsewhere on Long Island.

Dean's Blue Hole Anchorage

Dean's Blue Hole should be treated primarily as a daytime yacht excursion rather than a dedicated overnight anchorage. There is no marina or formal yacht harbour beside the blue hole, and the lagoon immediately surrounding it is intended for swimming, snorkeling and diving rather than anchoring. Larger yachts should remain clear of the confined inner cove and use a tender for the final approach to Dean's Blue Hole Beach.

For overnight stays, charter yachts may prefer established anchorages elsewhere around Long Island or the protected harbour at Clarence Town, depending on the itinerary and weather. Long Island's coastline has relatively few completely protected natural harbours, and many anchorages are exposed when wind direction changes. Captains should therefore select an overnight position according to current conditions rather than relying on Dean's Bay as an all-weather anchorage.

Dean's Blue Hole General Information

Dean's Blue Hole has become internationally synonymous with freediving. Its exceptional depth begins only steps from shore, allowing elite athletes to descend into deep water without requiring a long offshore boat journey. Vertical Blue brings competitors and spectators from around the world to Long Island, while freediving schools also use the site for training.

The site is equally impressive without diving to extreme depths. Snorkelers can swim above the edge and look into the dark vertical shaft, while the surrounding shallow lagoon provides clear, calm water and marine life along the beach. Dean's Blue Hole therefore works as both an internationally important dive site and an accessible natural attraction for a much wider range of yacht charter guests.
