Dean's Blue Hole: The 663-Foot Abyss of Long Island

Dean's Blue Hole is one of the most extraordinary natural attractions in The Bahamas, plunging 663 feet beneath the turquoise waters of Long Island. Located in a sheltered bay west of Clarence Town, the immense marine sinkhole is currently recognized by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism as the third-deepest blue hole in the world. Its dark sapphire center, brilliant shallows and surrounding white-sand beach create one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Southern Out Islands.

The blue hole sits inside a natural limestone amphitheater enclosed on three sides by rocky cliffs and on the fourth by a shallow lagoon and powdery beach. At the surface, the opening is approximately 30 meters across, but below roughly 20 meters it expands into an enormous underwater cavern reaching around 100 meters in diameter. The sudden transition from pale turquoise shallows to seemingly bottomless blue is what gives Dean's Blue Hole its unmistakable appearance.

Larger yachts should remain clear of the confined inner cove and use a tender for the final approach to Dean's Blue Hole Beach.

For overnight stays, charter yachts may prefer established anchorages elsewhere around Long Island or the protected harbour at Clarence Town, depending on the itinerary and weather. Long Island's coastline has relatively few completely protected natural harbours, and many anchorages are exposed when wind direction changes. Captains should therefore select an overnight position according to current conditions rather than relying on Dean's Bay as an all-weather anchorage.

Dean's Blue Hole has become internationally synonymous with freediving. Its exceptional depth begins only steps from shore, allowing elite athletes to descend into deep water without requiring a long offshore boat journey.
