Eleuthera Island Yacht Charter: Pink Sands, Hidden Coves & Wild Bahamas

Eleuthera Island is a charter location in Eleuthera & Harbour Island, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Eleuthera Island Charter Guide

Stretching for approximately 180 kilometres through the central Bahamas, Eleuthera Island is a spectacular yacht charter destination defined by dramatic contrasts. The island becomes barely 1.6 kilometres wide in places, with the deep-blue Atlantic Ocean on one side and the calm turquoise Bight of Eleuthera on the other.

Unlike the compact cruising grounds of the Abacos, Eleuthera rewards a slower journey along its remarkably long coastline. Yachts can move between Governor's Harbour, Hatchet Bay, Ten Bay, Rock Sound, Cape Eleuthera, and dozens of quieter coves and beaches, stopping to explore pink-sand shores, limestone caves, blue holes, reefs, and traditional settlements along the way.

Eleuthera is particularly attractive for guests who want a Bahamas charter with more land exploration. Anchor off a deserted beach in the morning, tender ashore to explore the island's pineapple country or historic settlements, visit the extraordinary Glass Window Bridge, then return to the yacht for a quiet evening beneath an almost empty coastline. More than 35 miles of mainland Eleuthera feature blush-colored sand, giving the island some of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas.

Eleuthera Island Navigation

Eleuthera's unusual geography means navigation differs considerably between its two coasts. The Bight of Eleuthera along the western side generally provides the more practical yacht cruising waters, with numerous bays, settlements, and anchorages. The Atlantic coast is significantly more exposed, with reefs, breaking seas, rocky shoreline, and fewer suitable anchorages. Captains should use current charts, visual navigation, weather forecasts, tide information, and local knowledge when moving between cruising areas.

The island's length also means yacht itineraries should be planned carefully rather than treating Eleuthera as a single overnight stop. Governor's Harbour, Rock Sound, Ten Bay, Hatchet Bay, and southern Eleuthera each provide different navigation and shelter considerations. Larger yachts can remain in suitable deeper anchorages while tenders are used to explore Eleuthera's many shallow coves, sandbars, and nearby cayes.

Eleuthera Island Anchorage

Eleuthera offers a wide selection of anchorages along its western coastline. Governor's Harbour provides approximately 7 to 12 feet of water and convenient access to one of the island's most attractive settlements, although it is exposed to westerly conditions. Nearby Levi Island offers a useful alternative with good sandy holding and protection from western and northern winds.

Farther south, Ten Bay and Rock Sound Harbour provide two excellent cruising bases. Ten Bay offers approximately 10 to 15 feet of water beside a sweeping beach and strong protection from easterly winds, while Rock Sound has an enormous anchoring area with very good holding and convenient access to shops, restaurants, Ocean Hole, and other attractions ashore.

Eleuthera Island General Information

Eleuthera is one of the longest and narrowest major islands in the Bahamas, extending roughly 180 kilometres from north to south. Its principal communities include Governor's Harbour, Gregory Town, Hatchet Bay, Rock Sound, and several smaller settlements, while three airports at North Eleuthera, Governor's Harbour, and Rock Sound make different sections of the island accessible to charter guests.

The island is famous for its pineapple-growing heritage and remarkable natural landmarks. At the Glass Window Bridge, a strip of rock only around 30 feet wide separates the dark Atlantic from the luminous Bight of Eleuthera. Nearby Queen's Bath contains natural rock pools carved by centuries of waves, while southern Eleuthera is home to the extraordinary inland saltwater basin known as Ocean Hole.
