Spanish Wells Yacht Charter: Fishing Heritage, Beaches & Northern Eleuthera

Set on St. George's Cay just off the northern tip of Eleuthera, Spanish Wells is one of the Bahamas' most distinctive yacht charter stops. The compact island combines a busy working waterfront, shallow turquoise water, powder-white beaches, and a deeply rooted fishing culture that feels very different from the resort atmosphere of nearby Harbour Island.

Spanish Wells is especially famous for its connection to Bahamian spiny lobster fishing. Commercial fishing remains central to the community, with working boats, marine businesses, docks, and seafood forming an important part of everyday island life. For yacht guests, this creates an unusually authentic stop where the harbour is as much a workplace as it is a cruising destination.

The island is connected by bridge to neighboring Russell Island, expanding the area available to explore by golf cart or tender. Quiet beaches, sandbars, nearby Meeks Patch, fishing grounds, and easy access toward Harbour Island and northern Eleuthera make Spanish Wells an excellent base for several days of exploration.

Spanish Wells is surrounded by shallow banks, narrow channels, sandbars, and reefs, making accurate navigation particularly important. Current Waterway Guide information includes a shoaling alert west of the Spanish Wells channel, so captains should rely on updated charts, tide information, depth monitoring, good daylight, and current local knowledge rather than historical depths alone.

For yachts using Spanish Wells Yacht Haven, the marina currently operates 30 slips and accommodates vessels up to approximately 165 feet. Its published maximum depths are 12 feet at the face dock and 11 feet within slips at high tide, making tide planning important for deeper-draft yachts. The marina should be contacted before arrival to confirm actual low-water conditions and berth suitability.

A popular anchoring area lies along the southern side of Russell Island, immediately west of the main Spanish Wells harbour entrance. Waterway Guide reports approximately 6 to 8 feet of water, with good holding and the strongest protection from northerly conditions. The nearby deep and shallow-draft channels should be kept clear, and regular local boat traffic can produce wake.

Additional options include Meeks Patch and the western side of Russell Island. Meeks Patch East offers deep sandy holding in roughly 2 to 4 metres at mean low water and is particularly useful in south through west winds, while the Russell Island Sandbar area provides another quiet anchorage with excellent sandy holding in northerly conditions.

Spanish Wells developed around fishing and maritime trade, and its name is traditionally associated with freshwater wells used by Spanish ships crossing the Atlantic. Today the settlement offers provisioning, restaurants, marine supplies, repairs, a government dock, and Spanish Wells Yacht Haven, making it one of the more practical yacht stops around northern Eleuthera.

The island is compact enough to explore easily by golf cart. Guests can visit the Spanish Wells Museum, walk along the working harbour, continue across the bridge to Russell Island, or spend the afternoon on Spanish Wells Beach, where the water remains shallow for a considerable distance offshore.
