Harbour Island Yacht Charter: Pink Sands, Dunmore Town & Luxury Marinas

Located just off the northern coast of Eleuthera, Harbour Island is one of the most elegant yacht charter destinations in the Bahamas, combining its famous pink-sand coastline with sophisticated restaurants, boutique hotels, historic architecture, and an increasingly impressive selection of yacht and superyacht marinas. Accessible only by boat or ferry, the island retains an intimate atmosphere despite its international reputation.

The heart of the island is Dunmore Town, where pastel-colored cottages, narrow streets, historic churches, waterfront restaurants, and golf carts create one of the most distinctive settlements in the Bahamas. The town dates to the late 18th century and preserves the New England-style architecture associated with Loyalist settlement.

On the eastern shore, Harbour Island's legendary Pink Sands Beach stretches for more than three miles, while the protected western harbour provides yacht berthing and anchoring close to Dunmore Town. For charter guests, this combination makes Harbour Island particularly compelling: spend the morning swimming from a rose-colored beach, enjoy lunch in town, then return to the yacht for sunset over the sheltered harbour.

Harbour Island's approaches require more care than the island's polished atmosphere might suggest. Yachts arriving from the north encounter the Devil's Backbone, a shallow, jagged reef system running off northern Eleuthera. Valentines Resort & Marina strongly recommends using experienced local pilots when navigating this area, particularly for unfamiliar or deeper-draft yachts.

The harbour side itself contains shoals, narrow passages, local ferry traffic, and currently reported unmarked underwater cables, so updated charts and local knowledge remain essential. Larger yachts should coordinate directly with their chosen marina before arrival. Harbour Island now has several substantial facilities, including Valentines, Romora Bay, and Briland Club, with Briland Club able to accommodate vessels up to approximately 300 feet.

The Dunmore Town anchorage lies along the protected western side of Harbour Island between Valentines and Romora Bay. Waterway Guide reports approximately 8 to 12 feet of water, with the best holding generally found in deeper sand away from the harder bottom closer to shore. It provides good protection in prevailing easterly conditions, although strong westerly winds can make the anchorage uncomfortable.

Farther north, Little Bay provides another attractive anchoring option with approximately 5 to 8 feet at mean low water and excellent holding in deep sand. The anchorage is well protected from northeast through southeast winds and provides dinghy access ashore, from where guests can walk toward Pink Sands Beach or the northern end of Harbour Island.

Harbour Island is only around 3.2 miles long, making it exceptionally easy to explore by golf cart. Dunmore Town is one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas, while the island's colorful clapboard homes and Loyalist architecture have helped earn Harbour Island the nickname "Nantucket of the Caribbean."

Yacht infrastructure is unusually strong for such a small island. Valentines Resort & Marina accommodates yachts up to 200 feet, Romora Bay operates a 40-slip marina for vessels over 200 feet, and Briland Club offers 34 megayacht berths for vessels up to 300 feet. This combination of serious superyacht infrastructure and intimate island life is one of Harbour Island's defining advantages.
