Egg Island is a charter location in Eleuthera & Harbour Island, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Egg Island Charter Guide

Located west of Royal Island and Spanish Wells, Egg Island is a remote, uninhabited cay surrounded by shallow turquoise water, coral reefs, and quiet beaches. Its position at the western edge of the northern Eleuthera island chain makes it a natural stopping point for yachts traveling between Nassau, Spanish Wells, Harbour Island, and the wider Bight of Eleuthera.

The island itself remains almost completely undeveloped. Instead of marinas, restaurants, or resorts, guests come for swimming, snorkeling, beachcombing, fishing, and the extraordinary marine environment around Egg Reef, which forms the western section of the reef system commonly associated with the Devil's Backbone.

For yacht charter guests, Egg Island works particularly well as a peaceful contrast to nearby Harbour Island and Spanish Wells. Anchor beside the cay, explore the shallow lagoon by tender or paddleboard, snorkel along Egg Reef, and enjoy an island where the surrounding sea remains the main attraction.

Egg Island Navigation

Navigation around Egg Island requires particular attention to Egg Reef, a dangerous submerged reef extending north and east toward the islands around Spanish Wells. Official sailing directions identify Egg Reef as the northern edge of a broad shoal-water bank and warn that less water than charted has been reported in the vicinity of Egg Island.

Yachts traveling between Egg Island, Royal Island, and Spanish Wells should therefore use current charts, good daylight, depth monitoring, and local knowledge. The shallow interior waters are much better explored by tender, while deeper-draft yachts should remain well clear of reef edges and shoaling areas. Egg Island Light also serves as a useful navigational landmark for vessels approaching the area.

Egg Island Anchorage

The most popular anchoring area lies off the small beach on the western side of Egg Island, where approximately 7 to 10 feet of water and generally good holding provide a comfortable stop in settled easterly conditions.

The anchorage is exposed from most other directions and can develop swell when winds strengthen. Official sailing directions also identify a deeper offshore anchorage north-west of the island but describe the holding there as poor and note that heavy swell commonly enters. For most charter yachts, anchoring closer to the protected western beach in suitable weather is the more attractive option.

Egg Island General Information

Egg Island is uninhabited and highly valued for its marine environment. Egg Reef supports coral arches, sea fans, tropical fish, nurse sharks, and hawksbill turtles, making snorkeling one of the strongest reasons to include the cay on a northern Eleuthera itinerary.

Another landmark is Egg Island Lighthouse, established in 1891 and positioned at the western end of the northern Eleuthera island chain. The island's isolation, shallow protected water, coral habitat, and lack of large-scale development give it a distinctly wild character compared with nearby Spanish Wells and Harbour Island.
