Rock Sound Yacht Charter: Protected Harbour, Ocean Hole & South Eleuthera

Located on the western coast of southern Eleuthera, Rock Sound is one of the island's most useful and rewarding yacht charter stops, combining an enormous natural harbour with excellent anchoring, easy provisioning, local restaurants, and several of Eleuthera's best-known natural attractions. It is also the largest settlement in South Eleuthera, giving visiting yachts access to more shoreside services than many smaller communities along the island.

The harbour itself is a major part of Rock Sound's appeal. Its broad expanse gives captains considerable room to choose an anchoring position according to wind direction, while guests can tender ashore to explore the town, stock the yacht, or visit Ocean Hole, the famous inland blue hole located on the southern edge of the settlement.

Rock Sound also occupies an excellent position for continuing south toward Cape Eleuthera or north toward Governor's Harbour and Hatchet Bay. For charter itineraries that combine cruising with practical stops for provisions, shore excursions, and guest transfers, it is one of the most important destinations in southern Eleuthera.

Rock Sound Harbour lies on Eleuthera's Banks side, where cruising conditions are generally more protected than along the exposed Atlantic coast. The harbour is exceptionally large, but yachts should still use current charts, visual navigation, and depth monitoring because shoaling and shallow banks are common throughout western Eleuthera.

The main settlement and government dock lie along the eastern shore of the harbour. Captains should keep the dock approach clear and select anchoring depth according to yacht draft. Rock Sound Airport and Dock are also listed among the Bahamas' current Ports of Entry, making Rock Sound useful for some international arrival and clearance arrangements when coordinated in advance.

The principal Rock Sound Settlement anchorage extends north and south of the government dock. Waterway Guide currently reports approximately 7 to 9 feet of water, with very good holding once the anchor penetrates the layer of silty sand. The anchorage provides convenient access to town, supermarkets, restaurants, and shore facilities, although stronger southwesterly or westerly weather can create uncomfortable conditions.

When strong west winds are expected, yachts can move approximately 1.5 nautical miles across the harbour to the western anchorage, where Waterway Guide reports roughly 6 to 8 feet of water. This side is much more remote, with little shoreside development, but it provides a useful alternative when conditions make the settlement side uncomfortable.

Rock Sound is the largest settlement in South Eleuthera and provides supermarkets, restaurants, hardware supplies, fuel access, a government dock, and Rock Sound International Airport. The airport is an official Port of Entry, making the town particularly useful for yacht itineraries involving guest arrivals or departures in southern Eleuthera.

The town's signature attraction is Ocean Hole, a remarkable inland saltwater blue hole surrounded by limestone and vegetation. Nearby, visitors can also explore Boiling Hole and Cathedral Caves, another geological attraction just off Queen's Highway. Together they make Rock Sound one of the most interesting shoreside stops on an Eleuthera yacht charter.
