Meeks Patch Yacht Charter: Pig Beach, Sandbars & Northern Eleuthera

Located just west of Spanish Wells in northern Eleuthera, Meeks Patch is a small, undeveloped island surrounded by brilliant turquoise shallows, white-sand beaches, and excellent yacht anchorages. The cay lies approximately 1.75 nautical miles from the western entrance to Spanish Wells, making it an easy escape from the settlement while still remaining close to its restaurants, provisioning, and marina facilities.

Meeks Patch has become particularly well known for its own Pig Beach, where a small population of pigs lives beside the southern cove and visiting boats regularly stop for wildlife encounters. Away from the pigs, the island remains wonderfully simple, with several beaches, shallow sand flats, and reefs that are ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling.

For yacht charter guests, Meeks Patch works perfectly as either a relaxed daytime excursion or a peaceful overnight stop. Spanish Wells, Russell Island, Royal Island, Egg Island, and northern Eleuthera are all nearby, allowing the cay to fit naturally into a wider itinerary without requiring a long passage.

The waters around Meeks Patch are shallow and dominated by sandbanks, particularly between the cay and nearby Spanish Wells. Yacht crews should use current charts, good daylight, depth monitoring, and visual navigation when approaching, as the surrounding turquoise flats become extremely shallow in places.

Meeks Patch itself is elongated roughly north to south, with navigable water on both the eastern and western sides. The appropriate side is often chosen according to wind direction. Deeper-draft yachts should remain in suitable water while tenders and other shallow-draft craft handle close access to the beaches, sandbars, and southern cove.

The western anchorage is one of the best-known options, with approximately 7 to 9 feet of water and excellent holding in deep sand. It offers particularly good protection during strong easterly winds and provides easy shore access to the western beaches.

When winds shift toward the south or west, yachts can move to the eastern side of Meeks Patch, where depths at mean low water are approximately 2 to 4 metres. Holding is generally excellent in deep sand, although patches of grass and rock occur in places. The island therefore gives captains useful flexibility to change sides as weather conditions evolve.

Meeks Patch has no town, marina, shops, or conventional resort infrastructure, so visiting yachts should arrive self-sufficient. Spanish Wells is only a short tender ride away when conditions permit, making it easy to combine the solitude of Meeks Patch with access to supplies and restaurants nearby.

The southern end of the island is home to the popular Meeks Patch Pig Beach, while the southeastern reefs offer casual snorkeling opportunities. Several beaches have picnic areas used by local visitors and tour operators, but much of the cay remains undeveloped and centered entirely around the surrounding water.
