Dunmore Town Yacht Charter: Historic Harbour & Pink Sands on Harbour Island
Dunmore Town is a charter location in Eleuthera & Harbour Island, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Dunmore Town Charter Guide
Set along the sheltered western shore of Harbour Island, Dunmore Town is one of the most picturesque yacht charter stops in the Bahamas. Pastel-colored cottages, narrow streets, historic churches, waterfront restaurants, boutiques, and golf carts create an atmosphere that feels refined without losing the intimacy of a small Bahamian settlement.
The town was formally laid out in 1791 by John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore, who divided the settlement into 190 lots. Its New England-influenced architecture reflects the Loyalist heritage of Harbour Island, with clapboard homes, shutters, verandas, and brightly painted facades still defining many of the streets today.
For yacht guests, Dunmore Town combines an excellent waterfront location with easy access to the island's Atlantic coast. Step ashore from the harbour, explore Bay Street and the historic center, enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the island's restaurants, then cross Harbour Island in just a few minutes to reach the famous Pink Sands Beach
Dunmore Town Navigation
Dunmore Town sits on the protected harbour side of Harbour Island, but reaching the island itself requires careful navigation. Yachts arriving from northern Eleuthera may encounter the shallow reefs of the Devil's Backbone, while the waters around Harbour Island contain shoals, local ferry routes, and restricted passages. Larger or unfamiliar yachts commonly use local pilotage and current marina guidance when approaching.
Once inside the harbour, Dunmore Town is easily reached by tender or directly from one of Harbour Island's marinas. The Government Dock on Bay Street is the principal public landing area for ferries, water taxis, supply vessels, and local traffic, while yacht guests commonly use marina docks or designated shore-access points instead.
Dunmore Town Anchorage
The principal Dunmore Town anchorage lies between Valentines Marina and Romora Bay Marina on the western side of Harbour Island. Waterway Guide reports approximately 8 to 12 feet of water, with the best holding generally found in deeper sand farther from shore. The anchorage provides good protection in prevailing easterly conditions but can become uncomfortable in strong west winds.
Daytime ferry and small-boat traffic can create wake, and shore access requires a tender ride toward the public waterfront or nearby landing points. Other nearby options include Fort Point, Little Bay, and the southern Harbour Island anchorage, giving captains alternatives based on wind, draft, and desired proximity to town.
Dunmore Town General Information
Dunmore Town is the only town on Harbour Island and is compact enough to explore easily on foot, bicycle, or golf cart. Bay Street follows the harbour waterfront, while streets such as Dunmore Street, Murray Street, Princess Street, and Chapel Street lead through neighborhoods of traditional Bahamian homes and historic buildings.
One of the town's most important historic landmarks is St. John's Anglican Church, whose pink-and-white building dates to 1768 and represents one of the oldest religious foundations in the Bahamas. The Government Dock, Bay Street, historic Loyalist cottages, galleries, boutiques, and nearby Pink Sands Beach make Dunmore Town especially rewarding for guests who want substantial shoreside exploration during a yacht charter.
