Current Island Yacht Charter: Current Cut, Secluded Beaches & Northern Eleuthera
Current Island is a charter location in Eleuthera & Harbour Island, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Current Island Charter Guide
Located just off the northwestern coast of Eleuthera, Current Island is a quiet, little-developed Bahamian island surrounded by shallow turquoise banks, secluded beaches, and one of the most extraordinary tidal passages in the Bahamas. It lies directly opposite mainland Eleuthera, separated from it by the narrow channel known as Current Cut.
Unlike Harbour Island or Spanish Wells, Current Island has almost no conventional tourism infrastructure. Its appeal comes from privacy, clear water, beachcombing, fishing, snorkeling, diving, and the freedom to explore an uncrowded coastline by yacht or tender. A small settlement remains on the island, reinforcing its distinctly local and isolated character.
The island's location also makes it a fascinating stop on a northern Eleuthera itinerary. Spanish Wells, Royal Island, Current Settlement, and the wider Bight of Eleuthera are all nearby, while Current Cut provides a dramatic natural connection between the waters on either side of the northern Eleuthera cruising grounds.
Current Island Navigation
The defining navigational feature is Current Cut, the narrow channel separating Current Island from mainland Eleuthera. The islands come within roughly 300 feet of one another at the cut, and the difference in tidal timing between the surrounding bodies of water can produce currents reported at up to approximately 10 knots. This makes Current Cut a passage that demands careful tide planning rather than casual navigation.
Captains should use current charts, tide information, visual navigation, and local knowledge before attempting the passage. Strong current can make maneuvering difficult, particularly when combined with wind, and the same conditions that make Current Cut famous for drift diving also make precise timing important for yachts and tenders. The surrounding banks are shallow, so deeper-draft yachts may remain in more suitable water and explore closer to shore by tender.
Current Island Anchorage
A recognized anchorage lies northeast of Current Island Settlement and south of Current Cut on the eastern shore of Current Island. Bahamas cruising guidance reports approximately 10 to 14 feet of water over sand, with good protection from most directions except south and southwest due to the low surrounding bluffs.
Another useful option lies across Current Cut on the Eleuthera side, north of Current Settlement. The Current West anchorage provides roughly 6 to 10 feet of water with good sandy holding and useful protection from easterly through southeasterly winds. Captains can therefore choose between the island and mainland sides according to weather, yacht draft, current, and their intended route through the cut.
Current Island General Information
Current Island belongs to the North Eleuthera district and remains sparsely populated. The present-day Current Island Settlement lies toward the southern part of the island, while historical records also identify the abandoned settlement of Bar Bay, whose residents gradually relocated elsewhere on the island during the 20th century.
The area's most famous experience is undoubtedly Current Cut, renowned for fast drift diving and snorkeling. Powerful tidal water carries divers through a narrow underwater passage lined with coral, gorgonians, and marine life, making it an exciting excursion for experienced divers when organized under suitable conditions.
