Governor's Harbour Yacht Charter: Pink-Sand Beaches & Central Eleuthera

Located near the center of Eleuthera, Governor's Harbour is the island's historic capital and one of its most attractive yacht charter destinations. A broad turquoise harbour curves around pastel-colored homes and the small peninsula of Cupid's Cay, while elegant Victorian-era houses rise above the waterfront on Buccaneer Hill.

For yacht guests, Governor's Harbour provides an appealing balance between authentic Bahamian town life and beautiful natural surroundings. Restaurants, grocery stores, local shops, historic buildings, and useful services are within easy reach of the waterfront, while the spectacular pink sands of French Leave Beach lie only a short walk across the narrow island.

Its central position also makes Governor's Harbour an excellent base for exploring Eleuthera in either direction. Cruise north toward Hatchet Bay, Gregory Town, and the Glass Window Bridge, or continue south toward Ten Bay, Rock Sound, and Cape Eleuthera. With its airport, provisioning, anchorages, and distinctive historic character, Governor's Harbour is one of the most practical and rewarding stops on an Eleuthera yacht charter.

Governor's Harbour opens onto the Bight of Eleuthera on the island's western side, providing considerably calmer conditions than the exposed Atlantic coastline immediately to the east. The harbour itself is broad, but shallow water, local moorings, debris near shore, and changing bottom conditions mean yachts should approach using current charts, depth monitoring, good daylight, and visual navigation.

For yachts requiring alongside facilities, French Leave Harbour Village Marina provides limited dockage close to town. Current Waterway Guide information lists two transient slips, dockside depth of approximately 12 feet, and capacity for yachts up to around 180 feet, together with several moorings. Larger yachts should confirm berth availability and current conditions before arrival.

The principal Governor's Harbour anchorage carries approximately 7 to 12 feet of water. The best holding is found along a band of sand roughly 200 to 400 yards offshore, while areas closer to the shoreline can be shallow, hard, or fouled by debris and old infrastructure. The harbour provides useful protection from many easterly conditions but is exposed to winds from the western quadrants.

Levi Island, around a mile north of Cupid's Cay, provides an excellent alternative when conditions favor it. The anchorage east of the island has approximately 8 to 10 feet of water, good holding in clear sand, and useful protection from west through southeast. It also remains close enough for an easy tender trip back into Governor's Harbour in settled conditions.

Governor's Harbour is the largest town and administrative center of Eleuthera, with government offices, restaurants, shops, provisioning, historic homes, and an airport located a few miles outside the settlement. The town is particularly pleasant to explore on foot, with Victorian-era architecture around Buccaneer Hill and the waterfront giving it a character distinct from the resort-oriented islands farther north.

One of its greatest attractions is French Leave Beach, also known historically as Club Med Beach. The pink-sand beach extends for more than a mile along the Atlantic coast and is suitable for swimming, snorkeling, and beachcombing. For guests anchored in Governor's Harbour, it can be reached on foot in roughly 15 minutes.
