Explore Cape Eleuthera by yacht, with a full-service marina, secluded beaches, world-class diving, sportfishing and pristine South Eleuthera waters.
South Eleuthera is a charter location in Eleuthera & Harbour Island, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
South Eleuthera Charter Guide
Stretching from the settlements around Tarpum Bay and Rock Sound to Cape Eleuthera and the island's southern tip, South Eleuthera offers a quieter and wilder yacht charter experience than the better-known cruising grounds around Harbour Island. Long beaches, immense natural harbours, blue holes, reefs, small Bahamian communities, and largely undeveloped coastline define this remote section of the island.
Rock Sound forms the main practical hub, providing provisioning, restaurants, an extensive anchorage, and Rock Sound International Airport, which is an official Port of Entry. Farther south, Cape Eleuthera provides the region's most developed yacht facilities, with a full-service 47-slip marina capable of accommodating vessels up to approximately 200 feet.
South Eleuthera is particularly rewarding for charter guests who prefer exploration over resort hopping. Days can combine snorkeling and diving, visits to Ocean Hole and Cathedral Caves, quiet settlements such as Tarpum Bay and Deep Creek, sportfishing off the edge of Exuma Sound, and long stretches of coastline where relatively few yachts are encountered.
South Eleuthera Navigation
Navigation along South Eleuthera varies considerably between the shallow western banks and the much deeper waters offshore. The island's western side provides most of the practical yacht access, but anchorages outside the larger harbours can be exposed and shoaling is common. Updated charts, good daylight, depth monitoring, weather forecasts, and careful route planning are essential, especially for deeper-draft yachts.
Rock Sound offers the region's largest natural anchoring area, while Cape Eleuthera provides reliable marina access with a currently published 12-foot controlling entrance depth. Smaller settlements such as Tarpum Bay are better treated as settled-weather stops rather than all-weather refuges.
South Eleuthera Anchorage
Rock Sound Harbour is the most versatile major anchorage in South Eleuthera. The settlement anchorage carries approximately 7 to 9 feet of water with very good holding, while yachts can relocate to the western side of the harbour when stronger west winds make the town side uncomfortable.
Elsewhere, Tarpum Bay offers roughly 5 to 10 feet of water with excellent holding, but it is an open roadstead best used in settled or favorable easterly conditions. At the island's southern tip, Lighthouse Point has an anchoring area in approximately 10 to 15 feet with protection from northerly through easterly weather, although hard bottom requires crews to find suitable sand. The nearby shoreline now includes Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, so yacht guests should not assume unrestricted shore access around the developed property.
South Eleuthera General Information
Rock Sound is the largest settlement in South Eleuthera and provides the region's main airport, shops, provisioning, restaurants, and everyday services. Nearby attractions include Ocean Hole, a famous inland saltwater blue hole, and Boiling Hole and Cathedral Caves, giving charter guests several worthwhile excursions beyond the coastline.
Farther south, Tarpum Bay, Wemyss Bight, Deep Creek, Waterford, and Cape Eleuthera preserve a quieter Out Islands atmosphere. Cape Eleuthera adds resort amenities, diving, sportfishing, fuel, and substantial yacht facilities, while the southernmost coastline around Lighthouse Point marks the dramatic meeting of deep-blue Atlantic water and the brilliant turquoise seas of the Bahamas.
