North Eleuthera Yacht Charter: Pink-Sand Beaches & Wild Bahamian Coastline
North Eleuthera is a charter location in Eleuthera & Harbour Island, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
North Eleuthera Charter Guide
At the northern end of Eleuthera, North Eleuthera combines wild pink-sand beaches, shallow turquoise banks, dramatic Atlantic coastline, and some of the most interesting yacht cruising passages in the Bahamas. It also acts as the natural gateway to Harbour Island, Spanish Wells, Royal Island, and the surrounding northern cayes, making it an important part of any yacht itinerary through Eleuthera.
The coastline changes dramatically over relatively short distances. Around Current Settlement and Lower Bogue, calm bank-side waters and beaches dominate the landscape, while farther east the island narrows dramatically around the Glass Window Bridge, where the brilliant Bight of Eleuthera and deep-blue Atlantic Ocean are separated by only a narrow strip of limestone.
For yacht guests, North Eleuthera provides an excellent balance between cruising and exploration ashore. Anchor beside a quiet beach, experience the powerful tidal waters of Current Cut, visit historic Preacher's Cave, explore the northern settlements, or arrange guest transfers through North Eleuthera International Airport before continuing toward Harbour Island or Spanish Wells.
North Eleuthera Navigation
One of the most important navigational features is Current Cut, the narrow passage between mainland Eleuthera and Current Island. It connects the northern cruising grounds with the Banks side of Eleuthera and is commonly used when traveling between destinations such as Spanish Wells and the western coast farther south. The passage can develop exceptionally powerful tidal currents, reportedly approaching 10 knots under extreme conditions, so timing the transit around suitable tidal conditions is critical.
The wider northern coastline also contains extensive shoals, sandbanks, reefs, and passages toward Harbour Island. Larger yachts approaching Harbour Island may encounter the notoriously intricate Devil's Backbone reef system, while shallow-draft vessels have additional routes around Current Island and Spanish Wells. Captains should use current charts, daylight, tide information, visual navigation, and local knowledge throughout the region.
North Eleuthera Anchorage
Several useful anchorages are available along North Eleuthera's protected western shoreline. The Current West anchorage, immediately north of Current Cut, offers approximately 6 to 10 feet of water with good sandy holding and useful protection from northeast through southeast winds. Guests can land by tender at the southern end of the beach and walk into Current Settlement.
Farther east, Cistern Rock and Bottom Harbour provide another attractive option with approximately 9 to 11 feet of water and generally good holding in sand. Lower Bogue also offers an anchorage in roughly 6 to 9 feet and is particularly convenient for guest transfers because it is the closest recognized anchoring area to North Eleuthera International Airport, although its protection is considerably more limited.
North Eleuthera General Information
North Eleuthera serves as the primary aviation gateway for Harbour Island, Spanish Wells, and the northern part of Eleuthera. North Eleuthera International Airport handles domestic and international flights, allowing charter guests to join or leave a yacht without traveling through Nassau or farther south on Eleuthera.
The region also contains several of Eleuthera's most distinctive natural and historical landmarks. Preacher's Cave, near the island's northern tip, is associated with the Eleutheran Adventurers who arrived seeking religious freedom in the 17th century, while Current Cut is famous for its extraordinary tidal flow and challenging drift diving. Farther south, the Glass Window Bridge provides one of the most dramatic views anywhere in the Bahamas.
