San Salvador Island: Historic Landfall and World-Class Wall Diving in the Southern Bahamas

San Salvador Island rises alone from the deep Atlantic in the eastern Bahamas, surrounded by brilliant turquoise shallows, coral reefs and some of the most dramatic underwater walls in the archipelago. Small, quiet and far removed from the country's busiest cruising grounds, the island offers yacht charter guests miles of secluded beaches, exceptional diving and an unusually rich collection of natural and historic landmarks. San Salvador also occupies an important place in Bahamian history. Because San Salvador is exposed to the open Atlantic, most anchorages are weather dependent rather than true all-weather harbours. Wind direction and ocean swell should determine where a yacht remains overnight, while anchors should be placed carefully in suitable sand to avoid damaging coral habitat. For guests exploring dive sites or remote beaches during the day, the yacht can often remain farther offshore while tenders provide access to shallower coastal areas.

Cockburn Town is the capital and principal settlement of San Salvador, while San Salvador Airport provides air connections for guests joining or leaving a charter. Inland, Great Lake National Park protects a large lake and mangrove ecosystem important to native wildlife, including the endangered San Salvador rock iguana. Watling's Blue Hole on the southwestern side of the island is unusual because its water is entirely saltwater, indicating an underground connection with the ocean.

Diving remains San Salvador's signature experience.
