Port Nelson: Rum Cay's Historic Harbor of Reefs and Southern Bahamas Cruising

Port Nelson Map

Port Nelson is a charter location in Southern Out Islands, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Port Nelson Charter Guide

Port Nelson is the only inhabited settlement on Rum Cay and the natural center of yacht charter activity on this remote Southern Out Island. Set along the island's southern coast, the village overlooks clear turquoise water and a broad anchorage protected by offshore reef. With fewer than 100 residents on Rum Cay, Port Nelson retains the quiet, authentic atmosphere that has disappeared from many of the better-known Bahamian cruising destinations.

For yacht charter guests, the real attraction begins beyond the shoreline. Rum Cay sits on the edge of the continental shelf, creating exceptional diving, snorkeling and offshore fishing within easy reach of Port Nelson. The nearby HMS Conqueror wreck lies in only about 30 feet of water on Sumner Point Reef, while deeper sites feature coral walls, tunnels and dramatic drop-offs.

Port Nelson also works naturally as a stop on longer Southern Out Islands itineraries. Conception Island lies to the west, San Salvador to the northeast and Long Island farther southwest. Yachts can spend a night or two anchored off the settlement before continuing through one of the least crowded cruising regions in The Bahamas.

Port Nelson Navigation

Port Nelson lies within Saint George Bay on the southern side of Rum Cay, with reefs protecting much of the coastline. The approach requires careful attention to the charted reef passages and coral structure surrounding the bay. Good daylight is highly desirable, particularly for crews unfamiliar with Rum Cay, as the clear water allows sand, reef and changing depths to be identified visually.

Captains approaching the anchorage should remain east of Cotton Field Point and pay attention to charted submarine cables extending southwest from the settlement. Rum Cay has limited marine infrastructure, so visiting yachts should arrive appropriately provisioned and should not depend on Port Nelson for the range of services available in larger Bahamian ports.

Port Nelson Anchorage

The principal Port Nelson anchorage lies off the settlement in approximately 6 to 9 feet of water. Holding is generally good in sand, and yachts can move closer toward the beach when draft permits. Waterway Guide advises staying east of Cotton Field Point and remaining aware of the submarine cables extending from shore.

The anchorage is open and exposed from west through south, and surge can develop when conditions arrive from those directions. In favorable easterly or northerly weather, however, Port Nelson provides a comfortable and exceptionally peaceful stop with easy tender access to the village. Weather planning is particularly important because Rum Cay has few alternative protected yacht harbors.

Port Nelson General Information

Port Nelson is the social and administrative center of Rum Cay. The town square is named after Sir Milo Butler, the first Governor-General of The Bahamas and a native of Rum Cay, while the settlement's distinctive island-shaped street signs add to its character. Local restaurants such as Kay's Restaurant & Sand Bar serve traditional Bahamian dishes including conch, fish and lobster.

Beyond the village, charter guests can explore Rum Cay Salt Pond, Hartford Cave and the surrounding beaches and reefs. Hartford Cave contains ancient Lucayan petroglyphs, while the salt pond provides nursery habitat for young turtles, lobster, grouper and other marine species.
