Cockburn Town: San Salvador's Historic Yacht Anchorage and Diving Gateway

Cockburn Town is the capital and main settlement of San Salvador Island, occupying a quiet stretch of the western coast where turquoise water meets one of the Southern Out Islands' most historic communities. Cockburn Town Anchorage is the primary anchoring area for yachts visiting San Salvador's capital. It provides convenient tender access to the settlement and nearby diving operations, but it should not be considered a fully protected harbour. Open-ocean swell and surge can affect the anchorage even when local winds appear favorable, so weather and sea state should be monitored carefully.

For yachts wanting greater protection overnight, Riding Rock Marina is the more secure option. The town was named for Sir Francis Cockburn, who served as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of The Bahamas during the 19th century.
