Duncan Town: Salt Ponds and Remote Yacht Cruising at the End of the Ragged Islands

Duncan Town is the only settlement in the Ragged Islands, a tiny community perched on Ragged Island near the southern end of one of the most remote cruising chains in The Bahamas. Surrounded by shallow turquoise banks, salt ponds and dozens of largely uninhabited cays, the town feels worlds away from Nassau, the Exumas and the country's established yacht charter centers. For guests cruising this far south, arriving at Duncan Town is part of the adventure itself.

The settlement developed around Ragged Island's once-important salt industry. Duncan Town takes its name from Duncan Taylor, who helped establish the island's salt ponds during the 19th century, and a long salt pond still stretches alongside the community. Residents continue to harvest salt from family plots, preserving a link to an industry that once supported trade with Cuba and Haiti.

For yacht charter guests, Duncan Town provides a rare opportunity to combine genuine Out Island culture with expedition-style cruising. Bonefish flats, reefs and empty beaches surround Ragged Island, while Hog Cay, Little Ragged Island, Double Breasted Cay and the wider Jumentos Cays offer days of snorkeling, fishing and tender exploration. This is a destination for yachts that arrive well provisioned and prepared to enjoy isolation rather than conventional marina luxury.

Reaching Duncan Town requires significantly more care than approaching a developed Bahamian harbour. The Jumentos and Ragged Islands contain extensive shallow banks, submerged rocks, reefs and narrow passages, while charting is less reliable than in heavily traveled cruising areas. Good daylight and strong visual navigation skills are essential, and captains should plan conservatively around both vessel draft and weather.

Very shallow-draft boats and tenders can reach Duncan Town through a narrow channel cut through the mangroves west of the settlement. Larger charter yachts generally remain at anchor in Southside Bay and transfer guests ashore by tender. From the bay, a marked route leads across the island toward Duncan Town. Duncan Town Airport is also nearby and is the only airport serving Ragged Island.

Southside Bay is the principal anchorage for yachts visiting Duncan Town. Located between Ragged Island and Little Ragged Island, it provides a large anchoring area with good holding available in sand or grass as close to shore as the yacht's draft allows. Waterway Guide identifies it as the easiest anchorage from which to access Duncan Town.

Southside Bay provides useful shelter in many conditions but remains exposed to southerly weather, so it should not be treated as an all-weather harbour. Nearby alternatives include Coco Bay on Little Ragged Island and the anchorages around Hog Cay, including Middle Pen Bay and Lobster Hole Point. The wider Ragged Islands have no fully protected marina refuge, making reliable forecasts and the ability to reposition as conditions change particularly important.

Duncan Town sits on elevated ground overlooking a shallow, landlocked harbour and is little more than a mile in length. Fishing and boating remain central to life here, while supplies are limited and much of the community's food and freight arrives by mailboat. Visiting yachts should therefore arrive self-sufficient rather than expecting comprehensive provisioning, fuel or repair services.

One of the settlement's distinctive landmarks is its old lighthouse tower, completed in 1922 to help local vessels involved in trade with Cuba, Haiti and Nassau find their way home. The tower no longer functions as a navigational aid, but its elevated position provides broad views across Ragged Island and the surrounding sea. Together with the historic salt ponds, small harbour and nearby beaches, it gives Duncan Town a character found nowhere else on a Southern Bahamas yacht charter.
