Rum Cay: Shipwreck Reefs and White-Sand Wilderness in the Southern Bahamas

Rum Cay is one of the most secluded yacht charter destinations in the Southern Out Islands, an isolated island of white-sand beaches, vivid coral reefs and exceptionally clear ocean water. Covering around 30 square miles and home to fewer than 100 residents, it remains far removed from the busier cruising routes of Nassau and the Exumas. For yacht charter guests, that isolation is precisely the attraction, with quiet anchorages, virtually empty beaches and outstanding diving just offshore.

The underwater scenery is among the finest reasons to visit. Rum Cay sits on the edge of the continental shelf, where coral walls, tunnels and steep drop-offs create excellent conditions for scuba diving and snorkeling. One of the island's signature dive sites is the Grand Canyon, while the wreck of HMS Conqueror rests on Sumner Point Reef in approximately 30 feet of water. The 101-gun British warship sank in 1861 and is now preserved as an underwater museum.

Rum Cay also fits naturally into a longer Southern Bahamas yacht charter. San Salvador lies about 20 miles to the northeast, while Long Island and Conception Island can be incorporated into itineraries farther west. Port Nelson, the island's only inhabited settlement, provides a glimpse of traditional Bahamian life before guests return to the yacht for fishing, diving, surfing or another quiet night beneath the stars.

Rum Cay is surrounded closely by reefs, making careful navigation essential even though the island presents a relatively substantial profile when approached from offshore. Most reefs remain close to the coastline, but a significant reef extends roughly two nautical miles north from the island's northwestern tip. Captains should use current charts, good daylight and visual navigation when approaching anchorages or moving close to shore.

Port Nelson on the southern coast is the principal yacht destination. Approaching vessels should keep clear of coral heads and shallow areas while monitoring depth carefully. Charter yachts should not currently rely on Rum Cay for conventional full-service marina infrastructure, as the historic Sumner Point Marina has suffered extensive hurricane damage and its facilities remain subject to redevelopment. Port Nelson is therefore primarily an anchorage destination for visiting yachts.

Port Nelson provides the island's principal established yacht anchorage, with depths of approximately 6 to 9 feet and good holding in sand. The preferred area lies between Port Nelson's dock and the shoreline to the west, but vessels should remain east of Cotton Field Point and take care around charted submarine cables running southwest from the settlement.

The anchorage is exposed from west through south and can experience surge, so it is most comfortable when winds remain in favorable northern or easterly sectors. Flamingo Bay on the northwestern side of Rum Cay provides another potential anchorage in settled conditions, with attractive beaches and good snorkeling nearby, but coral heads complicate the approach and changing weather can make the bay unsuitable.

Port Nelson is the only inhabited settlement on Rum Cay and remains the social center of the island. Small restaurants and local businesses provide a taste of traditional Out Island life, while Port Nelson Airport connects Rum Cay with Nassau by domestic and charter flights. Hartford Cave on the northern side of the island preserves ancient Lucayan petroglyphs and provides an important link to the island's pre-Columbian history.

Nature remains Rum Cay's greatest attraction. The Rum Cay Salt Pond provides nursery habitat for young turtles, lobster, grouper and other marine species, while the northern coastline has become known for surprisingly good surf. Offshore, reefs, wrecks and deep-water drop-offs make diving and fishing central to almost any Rum Cay yacht charter.
