Hog Cay: Beach Bonfires and Remote Anchorages in the Ragged Islands

Hog Cay lies just north of Ragged Island at the southern end of the Jumentos and Ragged Islands chain, surrounded by clear turquoise water, sandy beaches and almost no development. For yacht charter guests, it is one of the signature wilderness stops in this remote corner of The Bahamas, offering protected anchorages, excellent swimming and snorkeling, and the rare pleasure of stepping ashore on a beach with little more than native vegetation and open sea in sight.

The cay has also become an important gathering place for the small community of Ragged Island. Its beaches have long been used for picnics and celebrations, including an annual Valentine's Day gathering traditionally marked by food, socializing and bonfires beside the water. Birdwatching and beachcombing add to the appeal, while the absence of resorts or commercial facilities keeps Hog Cay feeling genuinely untouched.

For yachts cruising the Ragged Islands, Hog Cay is particularly useful because it combines wilderness with two established anchorages. Middle Pen Bay and Lobster Hole Point provide shelter during the prevailing easterly conditions, while Duncan Town is only a short distance south and Double Breasted Cay lies immediately to the north. This makes Hog Cay an excellent base for several days of tender exploration, fishing and island hopping through the southern end of the chain.

Hog Cay is part of a remote cruising region where careful navigation is essential. Shallow banks, isolated rocks, reefs and strong tidal flow occur throughout the Jumentos and Ragged Islands, and routes between individual cays often require deviations around shoals rather than direct passages. Captains should use current charts, good daylight and visual navigation, particularly when approaching from farther north in the chain.

The western side of Hog Cay contains the principal yacht anchorages, where depths allow vessels to approach relatively close to the beach in suitable conditions. Larger yachts should remain aware of shallower patches near shore and use tenders for beach access and exploration. There is no marina, fuel dock or provisioning facility on Hog Cay, so yachts should arrive self-sufficient and use nearby Duncan Town only for limited local supplies.

Middle Pen Bay is one of Hog Cay's most popular anchorages and offers excellent holding in sand with protection from northeast through southeast. Cruising reports describe depths of around 10 feet in the main anchoring area, decreasing toward the beach, with broad stretches of shallow sand helping reduce swell from the prevailing easterly direction. The anchorage has plenty of room but offers essentially no protection when winds develop a western component.

Lobster Hole Point provides another established anchorage farther south, typically in around 7 to 8 feet of water with good sandy holding and protection from the east. Just north of the point is the informal Hog Cay cruiser gathering area, with a covered beach shelter, tables, seating and fire pits maintained with help from the Duncan Town community. Together, Middle Pen Bay and Lobster Hole Point make Hog Cay one of the most comfortable staging points in the southern Ragged Islands when the weather is favorable.

Hog Cay is uninhabited and has no conventional tourist infrastructure. Its appeal comes from its beaches, wildlife and connection with the neighboring Ragged Island community. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism identifies it as an ecotourism destination particularly suited to birdwatching, picnics and beach bonfires, while cruisers often use the cay as a social gathering point during longer journeys through the Jumentos.

Walking trails cross parts of the cay and provide access between beaches and sheltered coves, while snorkeling, fishing and paddleboarding can all be enjoyed directly from the anchorage. Duncan Town lies only a few miles south, so Hog Cay offers an ideal combination of isolation and relatively easy access to the only inhabited community in the Ragged Islands.
