Mayaguana: Untouched Reefs and Remote Yacht Cruising at the Edge of The Bahamas

Mayaguana is one of the most isolated yacht charter destinations in The Bahamas, an undeveloped Southern Out Island surrounded by pristine reefs, aquamarine shallows and long beaches where footprints can be difficult to find. Positioned between Acklins Island and Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos, it is a natural waypoint for yachts venturing through the far southeastern Bahamas. Its three small settlements, Abraham's Bay, Betsy Bay and Pirates Well, preserve an atmosphere that feels far removed from the country's major tourism centers.

The surrounding sea is Mayaguana's greatest attraction. Healthy offshore reefs begin in depths of roughly 45 to 60 feet, with deeper walls, drop-offs and even underwater cave systems providing excellent scuba diving. Closer to shore, coral heads, sand dollars and starfish can be seen in the clear shallows, while extensive flats offer excellent bonefishing. Beyond the reefs, deep Atlantic water creates productive grounds for larger pelagic species.

A Mayaguana yacht charter is particularly suited to guests who enjoy remote exploration. Abraham's Bay offers the island's principal cruising base, Horse Pond Beach provides an exceptionally quiet stretch of shoreline, and Booby Cay supports brown boobies and endemic rock iguanas. From Mayaguana, yachts can continue west toward Acklins and Crooked Island or southeast toward the Turks and Caicos, making the island an ideal stop on an ambitious Southern Bahamas itinerary.

Mayaguana is surrounded by extensive reef systems, so approaches require considerably more attention than those to developed Bahamian marinas. Abraham's Bay on the south coast provides the island's principal yacht access, with passages through the protective reef leading to anchorages near Guano Point and Low Point. Good daylight is important for distinguishing reef from sand, and captains should use current charts, depth soundings and visual navigation when entering the bay.

There are no major full-service yacht marinas on Mayaguana, making self-sufficiency important. The Government Dock at Abraham's Bay is surrounded by very shallow water and is primarily suitable for tenders rather than larger yachts. Pirates Well also has a small basin reached through beach rock and coral, but the reef near the entrance presents an additional hazard. Larger charter yachts are generally better served by anchoring in suitable water and using tenders for shore access.

Abraham's Bay offers the most established anchoring options on Mayaguana. The Guano Point anchorage at the eastern end has approximately 6.5 feet of water, with sand and coral on the bottom. The surrounding reef helps reduce wave action, although the anchorage remains exposed when winds arrive from the southeast through southwest. Farther west, the Low Point Pass anchorage has at least six feet of water and also benefits from the protection of the offshore reef.

Pirates Well provides another option on the northwestern side of the island, with depths of approximately 6 to 8 feet and sandy holding. It is much less protected from northwest and southwest winds, however, and ocean swell can wrap around the coastline even when the yacht is in the lee of the island. Mayaguana has no true all-weather yacht harbour, so anchorages should be selected according to the forecast and crews should remain prepared to reposition if conditions change.

Mayaguana is unique among the Bahamian islands because it retains its original indigenous name, which is associated with an endemic species of iguana. Abraham's Bay is the island's largest settlement, with Betsy Bay and Pirates Well forming the other two principal communities. Mayaguana Airport lies near Abraham's Bay and is the island's only airport with regularly scheduled service to Nassau.

Wildlife and undeveloped landscapes remain central to the island's appeal. Booby Cay, east of mainland Mayaguana, supports brown boobies, endemic rock iguanas and descendants of goats left by early settlers, while caves around the North Beach area can be reached by boat. For yacht charter guests, Mayaguana offers the increasingly rare experience of exploring an entire Bahamian island where nature still dominates almost every part of the itinerary.
