Jumentos Cays: The Wildest Yacht Cruising Chain in the Southern Bahamas

The Jumentos Cays are among the most remote and untouched yacht charter destinations in The Bahamas, a long chain of low islands, coral reefs and deserted beaches stretching south toward the Ragged Islands. Far beyond the established cruising circuits of Nassau and the Exumas, these cays offer a very different kind of Bahamas yacht charter, where days can pass between isolated anchorages with little sign of development and often few other yachts in sight.

Water Cay, Flamingo Cay, Buena Vista Cay, Raccoon Cay and Johnson Cay are among the principal stops as yachts work their way south through the chain. Each offers a different combination of beaches, limestone coastline, reefs and sheltered bays, while the surrounding water provides excellent opportunities for snorkeling, diving, spearfishing and offshore fishing. Most of the Jumentos Cays are completely uninhabited, preserving an atmosphere that is increasingly difficult to find elsewhere in The Bahamas.

A Jumentos Cays yacht charter is best suited to guests who value exploration and privacy over conventional resort facilities. There are no marinas, beach clubs or developed towns along most of the route, and the only permanent settlement in the wider Jumentos and Ragged Islands chain is Duncan Town much farther south. Instead, yachts move between pristine anchorages, launch tenders to empty beaches and explore reefs where marine life remains abundant.

Navigation through the Jumentos Cays requires careful planning and considerably more self-sufficiency than cruising the central Bahamas. The islands form a remote arc between shallow bank water and the deep Atlantic, with isolated rocks, reefs and shoals scattered throughout the route. Good daylight is particularly important for reading the water, while current charts, reliable depth sounders and conservative route planning are essential when approaching unfamiliar anchorages.

There are several routes into the northern Jumentos, including passages across the Great Bahama Bank and approaches through established channels farther north. Once inside the chain, yachts typically progress south from Water Cay toward Flamingo Cay, Buena Vista Cay, Raccoon Cay and eventually the Ragged Islands. Fuel, water, repairs and provisioning are effectively unavailable throughout most of the area, so yachts should enter the Jumentos prepared to operate independently for the duration of their stay.

The Jumentos offer numerous beautiful anchorages, but very few provide complete protection when the wind shifts through multiple directions. Water Cay is one of the principal northern stopping points, while Flamingo Cay has several established anchoring areas along its northern and western sides. Farther south, Buena Vista Cay and Raccoon Cay provide additional options that allow captains to reposition according to prevailing winds and approaching weather.

Holding throughout much of the chain can be excellent where deep sand is available, although rocky bottom, coral and narrow sandy patches make careful anchor placement important. Raccoon Cay is particularly useful because its multiple bights offer different protection depending on conditions, while Johnson Cay provides another established overnight stop farther south. There is no single dependable all-weather harbour, so experienced crews plan alternative anchorages in advance when cold fronts or changing wind directions are forecast.

The Jumentos Cays are one of the last genuinely off-grid cruising areas in The Bahamas. Most islands are uninhabited, cellular coverage is extremely limited away from Duncan Town, and conventional yacht services are essentially nonexistent. That isolation is also their greatest appeal. Snorkeling reefs, fishing grounds, limestone cliffs, trails and completely empty beaches can all be explored without the crowds found in more established charter destinations.

The chain is especially rewarding for yachts spending several days moving slowly south. Water Cay introduces the region with limestone cliffs and beaches, Flamingo Cay offers several attractive anchorages and excellent snorkeling, and Raccoon Cay provides some of the most versatile shelter in the Jumentos. From there, yachts can continue toward Hog Cay, Duncan Town and the Ragged Islands, completing one of the most adventurous cruising routes in the Southern Bahamas.
