Great Inagua: Flamingos, Salt Ponds and Yacht Cruising at the Edge of The Bahamas

Great Inagua is the southernmost island in The Bahamas and one of the most distinctive yacht charter destinations in the entire archipelago. Remote, sparsely developed and surrounded by deep Atlantic water, the island is defined by enormous salt ponds, wild beaches and an extraordinary population of flamingos. For charter guests willing to venture far beyond the established routes of the Exumas and central Bahamas, Great Inagua offers a genuine expedition-style cruising experience.

The island's defining natural attraction is Inagua National Park, a protected wetland covering more than 180,000 acres. It supports the world's largest breeding colony of West Indian flamingos, along with Bahama parrots, roseate spoonbills, herons, pelicans and many other native and migratory birds. Wild donkeys also roam parts of the interior, creating a landscape unlike anywhere else in The Bahamas.

Great Inagua is also strategically positioned for longer yacht passages through the southern Caribbean. Little Inagua lies only a few nautical miles to the northeast, while Mayaguana, the Turks and Caicos, Cuba and the Windward Passage are all within the wider cruising region. Matthew Town provides the island's main settlement and yacht access, while Man of War Bay offers a quieter anchorage farther north.

Great Inagua is an exposed oceanic island rather than a shallow-bank cruising destination, and yachts should approach with careful attention to weather, reef structure and sea state. Most services are concentrated around Matthew Town on the southwestern coast. Matthew Town Dock currently reports an approach depth of approximately 10 feet and dockside depth of around 8 feet, with berthing available for vessels up to roughly 160 feet. Fuel can also be arranged there.

Yachts cruising farther north toward Man of War Bay should remain aware of the working Morton Salt pier and the reefs and coral patches surrounding parts of the coastline. Good charts, current navigation information and daylight approaches remain important, particularly because Great Inagua has far less recreational boating infrastructure than more heavily cruised Bahamian islands.

Man of War Bay is the best-known anchorage on Great Inagua and provides a peaceful alternative to the waters off Matthew Town. Waterway Guide reports approximately 13 feet of depth, with a bottom of sand and coral. Yachts can anchor north of the salt pier in front of the old church ruins, where the bay provides useful protection from prevailing easterly winds.

The bay remains exposed from northwest through southwest, so it should not be treated as an all-weather refuge. Cruisers have also reported good sandy holding farther inside Man of War Bay near the beach, with less rolling than the more exposed anchorage off Matthew Town. Captains should carefully identify sandy patches and avoid coral when setting the anchor.

Matthew Town is the island's only settlement and the center of its salt industry. Solar salt production has shaped Great Inagua for generations, with vast evaporation ponds stretching across much of the island's interior. These same saline environments support brine shrimp that provide an important food source for the island's flamingos, creating an unusual relationship between industry and wildlife.

Another defining landmark is the Great Inagua Lighthouse at Matthew Town. The white tower rises approximately 113 feet and dates to the 19th century, when it was constructed to help vessels avoid the reefs responsible for numerous shipwrecks around the island. Visitors can climb the lighthouse for panoramic views across Matthew Town, the coast and surrounding sea.
