Walker's Cay Yacht Charter: Legendary Fishing & Diving in the Northern Abacos

At the extreme northern edge of the Bahamas, Walker's Cay is one of the most legendary sportfishing destinations in the Abacos. The small island sits where the shallow turquoise waters of the Little Bahama Bank meet the deep Atlantic, creating exceptional conditions for blue-water fishing, diving, and marine exploration. For more than 50 years, Walker's Cay built an international reputation among serious anglers before hurricane damage closed the original resort in 2004.

Today, Walker's Cay is being revived as a luxury boating and sportfishing destination. Its rebuilt marina is operational and can accommodate substantial yachts, while the surrounding Walker's Cay National Park protects an extensive barrier reef inhabited by sharks, barracudas, turtles, eagle rays, tropical fish, and large schools of pelagic species.

For yacht charter guests, Walker's Cay feels completely different from Hope Town or Marsh Harbour. There is no traditional settlement to explore, and the emphasis is firmly on fishing, diving, reefs, boating, and remote-island adventure. Grand Cay and the Double Breasted Cays lie nearby, making Walker's Cay an excellent northern base for exploring some of the least developed waters in the Abacos.

Navigation into Walker's Cay requires particular care because sandbanks and entrance channels can shift over time. The marina specifically advises visiting vessels to follow visual piloting rules and verify current conditions with the dockmaster. Its published approach uses a series of waypoints from the northeast before turning west into the marina.

The southern approach should currently be avoided by yachts. Walker's Cay states that several channel markers are missing and charted depths are inaccurate, recommending this route only for small tenders until future dredging is completed. Captains can contact the marina on VHF Channel 74 and request assistance with the approach if required.

Anchoring is available around both the north and south sides of Walker's Cay, although the marina provides the most secure and convenient option for visiting yachts. The southern anchorage carries approximately 8 to 10 feet of water with generally good holding in sand when grassy patches are avoided, but protection is limited primarily to northerly conditions.

Because the surrounding banks are shallow and exposed, anchoring conditions can change quickly with wind direction and sea state. Yachts seeking a more protected overnight stay will generally favor Walker's Cay Marina, which Waterway Guide currently lists with approximately 12 feet of approach and dockside depth and capacity for yachts up to 200 feet.

Walker's Cay is currently undergoing a major redevelopment. The marina is open, but the island's official website states that rental accommodations, restaurants, and public facilities are not yet available while construction continues. New marina-village, hospitality, and residential phases are planned as part of the island's revival.

The island remains especially important for sportfishing and diving. Its position beside deep Atlantic water provides access to blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo, and mahi-mahi, while the nearby national park protects coral reefs renowned for sharks and other large marine life. Walker's Cay also functions as a Bahamas Port of Entry, with customs and immigration available by prior arrangement.
