Tilloo Cay Yacht Charter: Secluded Beaches & Wild Southern Abacos

Bahamas

Tilloo Cay is a charter location in The Abacos, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Tilloo Cay Charter Guide

Stretching south of Elbow Cay along the protected Sea of Abaco, Tilloo Cay is one of the quieter and more secluded yacht charter destinations in the central Abacos. The long, narrow island separates calm turquoise bank water from the open Atlantic, creating a beautiful combination of shallow sand flats, beaches, rocky ocean shoreline, and sheltered anchorages.

Unlike Hope Town or Man-O-War Cay, Tilloo Cay has no commercial center, marina district, or regular ferry service. Development is limited primarily to private residences, making the island particularly appealing to yacht guests searching for privacy, swimming, paddleboarding, wildlife, and peaceful nights at anchor.

Tilloo Cay is also ideally positioned for exploring the southern Abacos. Tahiti Beach and Elbow Cay lie immediately to the north, while Sandy Cay, the Pelican Cays Land & Sea Park, and Little Harbour are easily incorporated into a southbound itinerary.

Tilloo Cay Navigation

Tilloo Cay lies along the southern section of the Sea of Abaco, where cruising water remains relatively protected but can become shallow around Tilloo Bank and the passages between surrounding cayes. Captains should use current charts, good daylight, depth monitoring, and visual navigation when approaching close to the western shoreline.

At the northern end, Tilloo Cut separates Tilloo Cay from southern Elbow Cay and provides access between the Sea of Abaco and Atlantic waters. Current navigation information should always be checked before using local cuts, and Waterway Guide currently lists hazards in the wider area, including a submerged dock piling near Tilloo Cay and a wreck near Tahiti Beach.

Tilloo Cay Anchorage

Several useful anchoring areas are found along Tilloo Cay's protected western coast. The main Tilloo Cay anchorage offers good protection in winds from north through southeast, with a bottom consisting mainly of sand and seagrass. Recent cruising reports describe plenty of room for multiple vessels and generally good holding when the anchor is placed in clear sand.

Another option lies near Tilloo Cay Castle, where approximately 7 to 10 feet of water and deep sand provide good holding in easterly through south-southeasterly conditions. The area remains exposed toward the northwest, while the surrounding shoreline and residences are private.

Tilloo Cay General Information

The island is home to the 11-acre Tilloo Cay National Reserve, established in 1990 after private landowners donated an important stretch of Atlantic coastline to the Bahamas National Trust. The reserve protects nesting habitat for white-tailed tropicbirds, yellow-crowned night herons, terns, and other seabirds, and is internationally recognized as an Important Bird Area.

Tilloo Cay remains largely residential and undeveloped, with no conventional tourism infrastructure. Its appeal comes from the natural environment, particularly the shallow Tilloo Bank, quiet Sea of Abaco shoreline, protected bird habitat, and easy access by tender to neighboring reefs and cayes.
