Marsh Harbour Yacht Charter: Marinas & the Gateway to the Abacos
Marsh Harbour is a charter location in The Abacos, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Marsh Harbour Charter Guide
Located on the eastern coast of Great Abaco Island, Marsh Harbour is the commercial and yachting heart of the Abacos. Its protected harbour, full-service marinas, excellent provisioning, international airport, restaurants, and marine services make it one of the most practical places to begin or finish a Bahamas yacht charter.
What makes Marsh Harbour particularly valuable is its position on the Sea of Abaco. From here, yachts can quickly reach Elbow Cay and Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay, Lubbers Quarters Cay, and numerous reefs and sandbars without requiring long passages. The sheltered cruising grounds between Great Abaco and the offshore cayes are one of the defining features of the region.
Marsh Harbour itself is more functional than the postcard-perfect outer cayes, but that is precisely its strength. A charter can provision, refuel, embark new guests, clear formalities, and enjoy restaurants ashore before cruising a short distance into dramatically quieter surroundings. For guests flying directly into the Abacos, Marsh Harbour provides one of the easiest gateways to the entire island chain.
Marsh Harbour Navigation
Marsh Harbour is approached from the Sea of Abaco through a marked harbour entrance, but shoaling means captains should not treat historic routes or depths as permanent. Current Waterway Guide information continues to show navigation alerts for shoaling in the Marsh Harbour approach, reinforcing the importance of updated charts, daylight, current local information, and careful depth monitoring.
Once inside, the harbour is spacious enough for substantial yacht traffic, with multiple marinas and anchoring areas around its perimeter. Care is required near shoals extending from the southern shoreline and around busy marina approaches. Larger yachts may prefer the security of a marina berth, with Abaco Beach Resort & Boat Harbour Marina currently accommodating vessels up to 200 feet.
Marsh Harbour Anchorage
The principal Marsh Harbour anchorage offers approximately 6 to 9 feet of water, with the best holding generally found in sand and grass in the central and western portions of the harbour. Waterway Guide identifies particularly good holding in roughly 6 to 8 feet south of the main entrance waypoint, while yachts should remain clear of marina approaches and commercial traffic.
The harbour provides useful protection from many directions but is somewhat more exposed when winds develop from the west. The eastern end has softer holding and is generally less desirable for anchoring. For yachts preferring full services, Abaco Beach Resort & Boat Harbour Marina offers 200 slips, fuel, potable water, electricity, Wi-Fi, pump-out services, security, and customs and immigration clearance.
Marsh Harbour General Information
Marsh Harbour is the commercial center of the Abacos, with supermarkets, marine supplies, hardware stores, restaurants, cafés, accommodation, and other services that are difficult to find on the smaller surrounding cayes. It is therefore one of the best places in the region for provisioning or preparing a yacht before several days of more remote island hopping.
The town is also home to Leonard M. Thompson International Airport, one of the Bahamas' major international gateways. Marsh Harbour is an official Port of Entry, and several local marina and airport facilities are designated for customs and immigration clearance.
