Great Abaco Island Yacht Charter: The Heart of the Abacos

Great Abaco Island is a charter location in The Abacos, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Great Abaco Island Charter Guide

As the largest island in the Abacos, Great Abaco forms the backbone of one of the Bahamas' most celebrated yacht cruising regions. The island stretches alongside the protected Sea of Abaco, with Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay, Cherokee Sound, Little Harbour, Sandy Point, and numerous quieter coastal communities providing access to beaches, anchorages, marinas, and the surrounding barrier cayes.

Great Abaco offers considerably more variety ashore than many smaller Abaco islands. Yacht guests can combine secluded beaches and fishing flats with restaurants, provisioning, art galleries, traditional settlements, and major transport connections, while still remaining only a short cruise from Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay, and other classic Abaco destinations.

The island is particularly useful as both an embarkation base and a cruising destination. Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay Airport provide convenient access for charter guests, while the long coastline allows yachts to move between developed harbours and remarkably quiet southern anchorages without leaving Great Abaco behind.

Great Abaco Island Navigation

Much of Great Abaco's yacht cruising takes place along the Sea of Abaco, the protected body of water between the main island and the chain of offshore cayes. Conditions are generally calmer than on the Atlantic side, making this one of the Bahamas' most enjoyable island-hopping regions, but reefs, shoals, sandbanks, and locally shallow channels still require careful navigation.

Navigation varies considerably from north to south. Established approaches serve major destinations such as Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay, while smaller harbours around southern Great Abaco can be significantly more restrictive. Little Harbour, for example, currently carries a navigation alert noting that its channel has shifted and requires particular care for vessels drawing more than about 4.5 feet. Current charts, daylight, tide information, and local knowledge are therefore essential throughout the island.

Great Abaco Island Anchorage

Great Abaco offers a broad selection of anchoring environments, from developed harbours near Marsh Harbour to quiet bays and coves farther south. Around Little Harbour and the Bight of Old Robinson, yachts can find protected water close to beaches, reefs, and the artist community around Pete's Pub and the Johnston Art Gallery & Foundry.

Little Harbour itself is now primarily a mooring field rather than a conventional anchorage, with approximately 6 to 8 feet of water and excellent all-around protection once inside. Nearby options such as Bridges Cay North and the outer Little Harbour area provide sandy holding for yachts waiting on tide or preferring more open water.

Great Abaco Island General Information

Great Abaco contains Marsh Harbour, the commercial center of the Abacos, and Treasure Cay, one of the island's best-known resort districts, while settlements such as Cherokee Sound, Crossing Rocks, and Sandy Point reveal a much quieter side of the island. The official Bahamas tourism authority identifies Great Abaco as the main and largest island in the chain.

South of Marsh Harbour, the island becomes increasingly natural. Casuarina Point is known for miles of beach and shallow bonefishing flats, Cherokee Sound retains a traditional fishing and boatbuilding character, and Little Harbour is home to the Johnston Art Gallery & Foundry and Pete's Pub.
