Sandy Point Yacht Charter: Fishing, Beaches & Remote Southern Abaco

At the southwestern tip of Great Abaco Island, Sandy Point is the southernmost settlement on Great Abaco and one of the most remote stops in the Abacos. Far removed from the busier cruising grounds around Marsh Harbour and Hope Town, the village is surrounded by shallow banks, mangrove creeks, fishing grounds, and long stretches of quiet coastline.

Sandy Point remains fundamentally a working Bahamian fishing community. Conch, lobster, grouper, and other fisheries have traditionally supported the settlement, while the surrounding flats have developed a reputation for excellent bonefishing. For yacht guests, this creates an experience that feels considerably more authentic and isolated than the resort-oriented islands farther north.

Its distance from the main Abacos circuit is part of the attraction. Yachts arriving here can spend their time fishing, snorkeling around Rocky Point, walking almost empty beaches, or exploring the shallow southern coast by tender before continuing toward the Berry Islands or returning north through the Abacos. Sandy Point is particularly rewarding for guests who value wilderness, fishing, and privacy over nightlife or luxury shoreside facilities.

Sandy Point sits at the southern end of the Bight of Abaco and Northwest Channel. A broad but unmarked approach is available from the southwest, with depths gradually decreasing toward the settlement. Two rock bars west of Conch Shell Point require particular attention, while the northern approach through the Bight of Abaco becomes much shallower and involves navigating around shifting sandbars.

This is an area where visual navigation is especially important. Captains should use current charts, good daylight, depth monitoring, tide information, and local knowledge when approaching the settlement. Larger or deeper-draft yachts may prefer to remain farther offshore in suitable depths and use the tender for access to Sandy Point itself.

Yachts can anchor along the western side of the Sandy Point settlement, choosing their distance offshore according to draft. Current cruising reports describe the bottom as predominantly sand and marl with good holding when properly set. Yachts should remain clear of the larger government dock and the smaller working dock immediately south of it because both receive regular local traffic.

The anchorage is particularly attractive in the prevailing easterly conditions, when Great Abaco provides useful protection. It becomes more exposed when winds move toward the west, while northeast or southeast conditions can produce some wraparound swell. The captain should therefore select the final position according to weather, yacht draft, swinging room, and anticipated local boat traffic.

Sandy Point is the southernmost settlement on Great Abaco and is served by Sandy Point Airport. The community is also known for its annual Homecoming and Conch Fest, which celebrates local culture and the settlement's longstanding connection to fishing and the sea.

Fishing is central to the experience here. The surrounding hard-bottom flats, mangrove-lined creeks, and shallow banks provide excellent conditions for bonefishing, while offshore waters support traditional commercial and recreational fishing. Sandy Point Beach is also particularly well known for solitude, long walks, shelling, and sunsets over the western waters.
