Lubbers Quarters Cay Yacht Charter: Secluded Beaches & the Sea of Abaco

Lubbers Quarters Cay Map

Lubbers Quarters Cay is a charter location in The Abacos, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Lubbers Quarters Cay Charter Guide

Located just south of Hope Town between Elbow Cay and Tilloo Cay, Lubbers Quarters Cay is one of the quieter yacht charter destinations in the central Abacos. The sparsely populated island sits entirely within the protected Sea of Abaco, surrounded by shallow turquoise water, sandy beaches, mangroves, fishing flats, and neighboring cayes that are ideally explored by tender.

Unlike Hope Town or Marsh Harbour, Lubbers Quarters has no conventional town center or busy commercial district. The cay is primarily residential, with scattered homes, private docks, sandy roads, and only limited shoreside facilities. Its low-key atmosphere makes it particularly attractive for guests looking to escape the busier stops of the Abacos while remaining close enough to reach restaurants, beaches, and attractions around Elbow Cay.

Its central position is one of its greatest advantages. Tahiti Beach lies immediately across the water, Tilloo Cut provides access toward the Atlantic, and Hope Town is only a short tender journey north. A yacht based around Lubbers Quarters can therefore combine peaceful nights in sheltered waters with easy daytime excursions throughout the southern Sea of Abaco.

Lubbers Quarters Cay Navigation

Navigation around Lubbers Quarters requires careful attention to shallow banks and narrow channels. Lubbers Bank extends several miles northwest from the cay with depths of roughly 4 to 5 feet in places, while deeper water can be found farther west. Larger and deeper-draft yachts should remain well clear of the bank and use the established deeper routes through the Sea of Abaco.

The passage along the eastern side of the island through Lubbers Quarters Channel is considerably tighter, with reported depths around 4 to 6 feet and a winding route between Lubbers Quarters and Elbow Cay toward Tilloo Cut. This is primarily suited to shallow-draft vessels and tenders. Captains should use current charts, tide information, visual navigation, and up-to-date local knowledge before committing to the passage.

Lubbers Quarters Cay Anchorage

Lubbers Quarters does not have the large, clearly defined harbour anchorage found at destinations such as Hope Town or Marsh Harbour. Visiting yachts generally use suitable protected water around the cay or anchor nearby toward Tahiti Beach and Aunt Pat's Bay, then explore Lubbers Quarters by tender. The surrounding islands help shelter much of this area from Atlantic swell.

Aunt Pat's Bay, immediately northeast of Lubbers Quarters near southern Elbow Cay, offers approximately 6 to 10 feet of water with good holding over sand and rock. It is well protected in northeasterly through southeasterly winds and provides convenient access to both Tahiti Beach and Lubbers Quarters, although it becomes exposed when winds shift toward the west.

Lubbers Quarters Cay General Information

Lubbers Quarters Cay is accessible primarily by boat and has only a small permanent population. The Bahamas tourism authority describes it as lying around three miles south of Hope Town, with roughly 30 full-time residents. Its relative isolation, quiet roads, private docks, beaches, and lush vegetation give it a distinctly residential and relaxed character.

One of the main places to visit ashore is Lubbers Landing, a waterfront restaurant and accommodation property on the cay. Fishing, snorkeling, paddleboarding, beachcombing, and tender excursions dominate the surrounding activities, while nearby Tilloo Cut provides quick access toward deeper Atlantic fishing grounds.
