Treasure Cay Yacht Charter: White-Sand Beaches & Northern Abacos Cruising

Treasure cay

Treasure Cay is a charter location in The Abacos, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Treasure Cay Charter Guide

Located on the northern coast of Great Abaco Island, Treasure Cay is one of the Abacos' most recognizable yacht charter destinations, combining an exceptionally beautiful white-sand beach with protected harbour waters and convenient access to the Sea of Abaco. The Bahamas tourism authority describes Treasure Cay as a serene resort district known for its crystal-clear water and white-sand beaches.

Its position makes Treasure Cay particularly attractive for yachts cruising between Marsh Harbour and the northern Abacos. Great Guana Cay lies across the Sea of Abaco, while Green Turtle Cay, No Name Cay, Whale Cay, and other northern cruising destinations are all within easy reach. This makes Treasure Cay an excellent place to slow down for a day or use as a staging point before continuing farther north.

The main attraction, however, is the coastline itself. Calm turquoise shallows meet an extraordinary crescent of powdery sand, while the protected harbour on the opposite side provides a completely different environment for visiting yachts. Treasure Cay combines classic Bahamian beach scenery with the sheltered cruising conditions that make the Abacos so enjoyable by yacht.

Treasure Cay Navigation

Treasure Cay is approached from the Sea of Abaco through a relatively narrow harbour entrance, and current cruising information indicates that shoaling remains an important consideration. Captains should use updated charts, good visual conditions, tide information, and current local knowledge rather than relying on historical depths alone. A current navigation alert also identifies an underwater security cable near the Treasure Cay harbour area.

The harbour itself is exceptionally sheltered once inside, but the approach requires greater care than the open Sea of Abaco might suggest. Treasure Cay is also undergoing a major redevelopment, including plans to restore and dredge the marina entrance and yacht basin. The new marina project states that its planned dredging is intended to provide approximately 9 feet of draft at low tide, so captains should verify actual current conditions rather than assuming future project specifications are already available.

Treasure Cay Anchorage

The inner Treasure Cay anchorage is one of the most protected anchorages in the Abacos, with approximately 6 to 8 feet of water and good holding over sand and grass. It occupies the area formerly used as a mooring field, but only a small number of old moorings remain and current cruising guidance warns that they have not been inspected for years. Anchoring carefully is therefore preferable to relying on an unverified mooring.

An outer anchorage is also available in approximately 10 to 12 feet of water, with good sandy holding away from grassy patches. It provides useful protection from roughly southwest through north-northeast but can become uncomfortable once easterly winds generate a long fetch across the Sea of Abaco. In those conditions, the inner harbour generally provides considerably better shelter.

Treasure Cay General Information

Treasure Cay was heavily affected by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, and its famous former resort and marina have been undergoing a significant redevelopment. The Bahamas government announced a major project to rebuild the marina, resort, residences, commercial facilities, and other infrastructure, while the current Treasure Cay Marina project is planning a new facility for yachts ranging from approximately 50 feet to more than 120 feet.

Away from the waterfront, one of the area's most unusual natural attractions is the Treasure Cay Blue Hole, hidden within the pine forest. The inland blue hole contains a mixture of salt and fresh water and reaches approximately 254 feet in depth, offering an interesting excursion away from the beaches and yacht anchorages.
