Where Should You Start a Bahamas Yacht Charter? Nassau, Marsh Harbour or Georgetown?
Choosing the right yacht is only part of planning a Bahamas yacht charter. Where you embark can completely change the islands you explore, the amount of time you spend cruising and the overall character of your itinerary.
Three of the most useful starting points are Nassau, Marsh Harbour and George Town on Great Exuma.
Nassau is the most convenient gateway and an excellent starting point for the northern Exumas. Marsh Harbour puts you directly inside the Abacos. George Town gives you immediate access to the southern Exumas and works particularly well for longer or one-way itineraries.
So which should you choose?
Nassau: The Best All-Round Starting Point
For most first-time visitors, Nassau is the easiest place to start a Bahamas yacht charter.
Located on New Providence, Nassau is home to Lynden Pindling International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in the country and the primary international gateway to the Bahamas. It also has a significant concentration of yacht marinas, including Nassau Yacht Haven, Palm Cay Marina, Hurricane Hole and several others.
That combination of international connectivity, yacht availability and provisioning makes Nassau especially convenient.
More importantly, Nassau sits within easy cruising distance of several major charter areas.
Where Can You Cruise from Nassau?
The most popular option is the Exumas.
The northern Exuma Cays begin less than 30 nautical miles southeast of Nassau, making destinations such as Highbourne Cay accessible within the first day of a charter. From there, yachts can continue south through Norman's Cay, Shroud Cay, Warderick Wells, Compass Cay and Staniel Cay.
Nassau can also work as a starting point for itineraries toward the Berry Islands or Eleuthera, depending on the yacht and available time.
Who Should Start in Nassau?
Nassau is particularly good for:
First-time Bahamas yacht charter guests
Seven-day Exumas itineraries
Guests who want the easiest international flight connections
Groups looking for the largest selection of charter yachts
Charters combining Nassau with the northern or central Exumas
Guests who want to spend a night in Nassau before or after the charter
If you are unsure where to start, Nassau is usually the safest choice.
Marsh Harbour: The Best Starting Point for the Abacos
If the Abacos are your priority, starting in Nassau makes little sense.
Start in Marsh Harbour instead.
Marsh Harbour is the commercial centre of the Abacos and one of the most important boating hubs in the Out Islands. It has full-service marinas, provisioning options, restaurants and Leonard M. Thompson International Airport.
The real advantage, however, is location.
From Marsh Harbour, you are already inside one of the best cruising grounds in the Bahamas.
Where Can You Cruise from Marsh Harbour?
The Abacos are arranged around the relatively protected Sea of Abaco, with a long chain of cays stretching along the eastern side.
Popular yacht-charter destinations include:
Elbow Cay and Hope Town
Great Guana Cay
Man-O-War Cay
Green Turtle Cay
Treasure Cay
Little Harbour
Instead of spending the beginning of your charter travelling toward the cruising grounds, you can start island-hopping almost immediately.
The Bahamas tourism authority specifically describes Marsh Harbour as the commercial hub of the Abacos, while nearby cays such as Elbow Cay, Great Guana Cay and Green Turtle Cay form some of the area's main boating destinations.
What Is an Abacos Yacht Charter Like?
The Abacos offer a noticeably different experience from the Exumas.
The Exumas are famous for remote anchorages, sandbars and largely undeveloped cays. The Abacos combine beautiful cruising with small settlements, historic villages, beach bars and established island communities.
You can anchor near Hope Town and walk through colourful streets, stop at Great Guana Cay for lunch ashore, explore Green Turtle Cay or spend the afternoon snorkeling from the yacht.
This makes the Abacos particularly appealing to guests who want a mixture of island life and secluded cruising.
Who Should Start in Marsh Harbour?
Choose Marsh Harbour if:
The Abacos are the main focus of your charter
You want shorter cruising distances between islands
You enjoy visiting small towns and settlements
You want a relaxed island-hopping itinerary
You have already explored the Exumas and want to see another side of the Bahamas
For an Abacos-focused charter, Marsh Harbour is easily the most logical starting point.
George Town: The Best Gateway to the Southern Exumas
At the opposite end of the Exumas is George Town, the main settlement on Great Exuma.
You will often see it written as Georgetown in online searches, but the official Bahamian spelling is George Town.
Exuma International Airport sits only a few miles away and receives domestic and international flights, making Great Exuma surprisingly accessible despite its position much farther south in the island chain.
For yacht charter guests, George Town provides an entirely different way to approach the Exumas.
Instead of starting in Nassau and travelling south, you begin at the southern end of the main Exuma cruising corridor.
Why Start an Exumas Yacht Charter in George Town?
The biggest advantage is time.
If your main goal is exploring the central and southern Exumas, starting in George Town prevents you from using the first part of your charter simply travelling down from Nassau.
Great Exuma itself also has several boating facilities, including Exuma Yacht Club and Emerald Bay Marina, while Stocking Island sits directly across Elizabeth Harbour from George Town.
From this area, you can begin working north toward destinations such as:
Lee Stocking Island
Rudder Cut Cay
Little Farmer's Cay
Black Point
Staniel Cay
Big Major Cay
Compass Cay
Warderick Wells
The exact itinerary will depend on your yacht and charter duration.
George Town Is Especially Good for One-Way Charters
One of the most interesting ways to explore the Exumas is with a one-way yacht charter between Nassau and George Town.
Instead of cruising south and then retracing much of the same route back to Nassau, a one-way itinerary lets you travel progressively through the Exuma chain.
For example:
Nassau → Highbourne Cay → Norman's Cay → Warderick Wells → Staniel Cay → Black Point → Great Exuma / George Town
Or the route can be completed in reverse.
This can be particularly attractive on longer charters because every cruising day takes you somewhere new.
However, one-way charters depend heavily on the yacht's schedule, repositioning plans and embarkation permissions. They are therefore less universally available than round-trip charters from Nassau.
Nassau vs Marsh Harbour vs George Town
The easiest way to choose is to decide which part of the Bahamas you actually want to explore.
Nassau
Best For: First-time visitors and maximum convenience
Main Cruising Area: Northern & Central Exumas
Marsh Harbour
Best For: Abacos island hopping
Main Cruising Area: The Abacos
George Town
Best For: Southern Exumas and one-way itineraries
Main Cruising Area: Central & Southern Exumas
There is no single starting point that is best for every Bahamas yacht charter.
Each one effectively opens the door to a different cruising experience.
Which Starting Point Has the Best Flights?
For international accessibility, Nassau wins easily.
Lynden Pindling International Airport is the primary international gateway to the Bahamas and offers the widest range of connections.
Marsh Harbour is also relatively easy to reach. Leonard M. Thompson International Airport is one of the country's important international gateways, and Marsh Harbour also has air connections through Nassau.
George Town is more remote geographically but still has useful air access. Exuma International Airport receives daily domestic and international services, including connections with Nassau and several North American gateways.
For guests flying privately, all three areas can be practical depending on aircraft requirements and final embarkation arrangements.
Which Starting Point Has the Best Yacht Selection?
Generally, Nassau offers the greatest flexibility.
Its major marinas and position as the country's principal transport hub mean many crewed charter yachts either base themselves there or pass through Nassau during the Bahamas season. The Bahamas Charter Yacht Show itself is held across several Nassau and Paradise Island marinas and has featured dozens of luxury charter yachts.
Marsh Harbour has a strong charter industry of its own, particularly for catamarans and cruising yachts operating within the Abacos.
George Town can also be an embarkation point, but the selection of yachts physically beginning there may be smaller. Some yachts will reposition to Great Exuma specifically for a charter, which can occasionally involve additional costs.
This is why your preferred yacht can sometimes determine your embarkation point just as much as your preferred itinerary.
Which Is Best for a Seven-Day Bahamas Yacht Charter?
For a typical seven-night charter, Nassau or Marsh Harbour usually makes the most sense.
Starting in Nassau gives you a straightforward seven-day route through the northern and central Exumas.
Starting in Marsh Harbour allows you to spend essentially the entire week moving between the Abaco cays without needing long passages.
George Town is excellent when you specifically want the southern Exumas or when the yacht can accommodate a one-way itinerary.
For shorter charters, reducing unnecessary cruising time becomes even more important.
Nassau or George Town for the Exumas?
If you already know you want the Exumas, this is probably the most important comparison.
Choose Nassau if you want:
Highbourne Cay
Norman's Cay
Shroud Cay
Warderick Wells
Compass Cay
Staniel Cay
Easier international flights
More yacht choices
Choose George Town if you want:
Great Exuma
Stocking Island
The southern Exumas
A northbound itinerary
A possible one-way charter through the Exuma chain
Less time travelling south from Nassau
For first-time Exumas visitors, I would generally favour Nassau because many of the Exumas' most famous cruising stops naturally fall along the route south.
For repeat visitors or longer itineraries, George Town becomes increasingly interesting.
Marsh Harbour or Nassau?
This comparison is simpler.
If you want the Exumas, choose Nassau.
If you want the Abacos, choose Marsh Harbour.
Technically, yachts can travel between different regions of the Bahamas, but the distances involved mean there is little reason to waste a seven-day charter repositioning between Nassau and the Abacos when you could simply embark closer to the area you want to explore.
The Bahamas is much larger than it appears on a map.
Choosing the correct embarkation point lets you spend your charter exploring rather than relocating.
So, Where Should You Start Your Bahamas Yacht Charter?
For most first-time Bahamas yacht charters, Nassau is the best overall starting point.
It offers the easiest international access, excellent yacht availability and a natural route into the Exumas, making it particularly well suited to classic seven-day Bahamas itineraries.
Choose Marsh Harbour when the Abacos are your priority. You will begin directly inside the cruising grounds, surrounded by islands such as Elbow Cay, Great Guana Cay and Green Turtle Cay.
Choose George Town when you want to concentrate on the southern Exumas or create a longer one-way itinerary through the island chain.
The best embarkation port is therefore not necessarily the biggest marina or the closest airport.
It is the one that puts your yacht closest to the Bahamas you actually came to experience.
