Athol Island Yacht Charter: Reefs, Beaches & Snorkeling Near Nassau
Athol Island is a charter location in Nassau & New Providence, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Athol Island Charter Guide
Located immediately east of Paradise Island, Athol Island offers one of the quickest escapes from Nassau into clear turquoise water, coral reefs, and secluded island scenery. The narrow island lies less than a mile from Paradise Island and can be reached from Nassau in roughly 15 minutes by boat, making it ideal for shorter yacht charters or the first stop after leaving the capital.
Athol Island is particularly known for its snorkeling and shallow marine environment. The historic Sea Gardens lie in the waters around the island, where coral formations and tropical marine life can be explored without traveling far from Nassau. The island's rocky shoreline, small beaches, and extensive turquoise shallows also make it excellent for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and tender exploration.
For yacht guests, Athol Island provides a useful contrast to nearby Nassau and Paradise Island. Spend the morning enjoying the city's marinas and resorts, then cruise east to anchor beside a largely natural island where reefs and clear water dominate the landscape. Rose Island lies immediately farther east, allowing both islands to be combined easily into a relaxed day of cruising.
Athol Island Navigation
Athol Island sits beside the eastern approach to Nassau Harbour, between Paradise Island and the waters leading toward Rose Island. The passage known as The Narrows between Paradise Island and Athol Island, along with the passages farther east, requires careful visual navigation because of shallow areas and coral. Vessels approaching Nassau from this direction should also remain sufficiently clear of rocks extending from Athol Island's southern shore.
The waters surrounding Athol Island include sand, grass, reef, and shoal patches, so larger yachts should remain within suitable deeper water while tenders handle close coastal exploration. Current charts, good daylight, depth monitoring, and local knowledge are particularly important when moving through the shallower areas between Athol Island, Paradise Island, and Rose Island.
Athol Island Anchorage
The principal Athol Island South anchorage offers approximately 8 to 12 feet of water with very good holding in deep sand when grassy ridges are avoided. The island provides useful protection from winds ranging approximately from west through north and northeast, making the anchorage a convenient alternative to remaining inside busy Nassau Harbour.
Conditions are less comfortable in prevailing easterly winds, when swell can reflect from the rocky shoreline, and the anchorage can become busy with excursion boats during the day. A small beach lies at the western end of the cove, while the shallow reefs nearby make the area popular for snorkeling. Captains should choose their final position according to yacht draft, wind direction, tide, coral clearance, and local traffic.
Athol Island General Information
Athol Island has an unusual place in Bahamian maritime history. It served as a quarantine station for vessels arriving near Nassau, and Bahamian law historically identified Athol Island specifically as a quarantine station. Ruins associated with this period remain part of the island's heritage. The surrounding Sea Gardens were also established as an early protected marine area in the late 19th century.
Today, the island also hosts The Village at Athol Island, a visitor experience offering Bahamian food, music, beach activities, snorkeling, and other cultural experiences. It operates less than 15 minutes by boat from Nassau, adding a shoreside option for charter guests while the surrounding reefs and anchorages remain the main attraction for yachts.
