Hoffman's Cay: Blue Hole Wilderness in the Berry Islands

Hoffman's Cay is one of the great natural stops on a Berry Islands yacht charter, an uninhabited cay surrounded by brilliant turquoise shallows, secluded beaches and remarkably little development. Hidden within its interior is the famous Hoffman's Cay Blue Hole, a vast circular pool approximately 600 feet across that has become one of the signature natural attractions of the Berry Islands.

Arriving by yacht is part of the experience. Guests can anchor off the cay, take the tender to a quiet beach and follow a short trail through native vegetation to the blue hole. Limestone cliffs rise roughly 20 feet above the dark blue water, creating a dramatic contrast with the pale sand and turquoise sea surrounding the island. Swimming is popular, while adventurous visitors sometimes jump from the limestone ledges when conditions are suitable.

Beyond the blue hole, Hoffman's Cay offers exactly the type of remote cruising that makes the Berry Islands special. Shallow coves and clear water provide opportunities for snorkeling, paddleboarding and tender exploration, with turtles, rays, starfish, conch and other marine life frequently encountered around the shoreline. Great Harbour Cay lies only several miles to the north, while Little Harbour Cay and other central Berry Islands can easily be incorporated into the same yacht charter itinerary.

The waters surrounding Hoffman's Cay are shallow and require considerably more attention than a straightforward marina approach. Yachts generally approach through the protected bank side of the Berry Islands, where sandbars, rocks and narrow passages can create limited depths. Good daylight is particularly important for reading the water, and deeper-draft yachts may need to remain farther offshore while guests continue to the cay by tender.

The western side of Hoffman's Cay provides the most practical access for visiting yachts and leads toward the beaches used for reaching the blue hole. Some routes become particularly shallow and may be more suitable near high tide, depending on the vessel's draft. Captains should use current charts, visual navigation and local cruising knowledge rather than assuming that every shallow-bank route is appropriate for a larger charter yacht.

The anchorage closest to Hoffman's Cay Blue Hole lies along the western side of the island and offers approximately 7 to 9 feet of water with generally good holding in sand and grass. Protection is strongest from the east, including the prevailing easterly conditions common in The Bahamas, while the anchorage remains more exposed when winds arrive from the west.

This anchorage provides convenient tender access to the beach and trail leading toward the blue hole. Shallow bars around the area can reduce incoming wave action, but they also make the approach more demanding for deeper-draft yachts. Larger vessels may prefer to anchor in deeper water nearby and use the tender for the final approach, particularly when tidal conditions make the inner route unsuitable.

Hoffman's Cay is uninhabited and has no marina, restaurants, shops or conventional tourist facilities. Its appeal is entirely natural. The blue hole is reached from the shoreline by a short walk through the island's vegetation, opening suddenly onto the limestone rim surrounding the enormous inland pool. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism identifies it as the most visited blue hole in the Berry Islands.

The absence of development makes Hoffman's Cay particularly rewarding on a crewed yacht charter. Guests can spend the morning swimming at the blue hole, return to the yacht for lunch and spend the afternoon snorkeling or exploring neighboring beaches and coves by tender before continuing through the Berry Islands.
