South Bimini Yacht Charters

South Bimini is the quieter, less developed counterpart to North Bimini, offering a more peaceful setting for yacht charters at the western edge of The Bahamas. Separated from North Bimini by the narrow Bimini Harbor, the island combines white-sand beaches, clear turquoise water, mangrove-lined shores and easy access to some of Bimini's best diving and fishing grounds. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism specifically describes South Bimini as the quieter of Bimini's two main islands.

A South Bimini yacht charter is particularly appealing for guests who want to spend more time swimming, snorkeling and exploring nature away from the busier atmosphere around Alice Town. Long stretches of sand line the western coast, while the surrounding waters offer access to reefs, wrecks and marine habitats inhabited by sharks, rays and tropical fish. The island is also home to the Bimini Biological Field Station, widely known as the Shark Lab, which has conducted shark research here since 1990.

South Bimini also occupies an excellent position for yachts continuing farther south through the Bimini chain. Cat Cay, Gun Cay and Honeymoon Harbour are natural additions to a charter itinerary, while North Bimini and Alice Town remain only a short trip across the harbor. South Bimini lies directly south of the main Bimini Harbor entrance, with shallow banks, reefs and rapidly changing depths surrounding much of the island. Captains should use current nautical charts, visual navigation and local knowledge when approaching unfamiliar areas, particularly around the southern and eastern sides where the water becomes increasingly shallow. Good daylight and clear conditions make the characteristic Bahamian changes in water color significantly easier to read.

For yachts requiring marina facilities, Bimini Cove Resort & Marina on South Bimini provides a protected deep-water harbor with a marked entrance. The marina reports an entrance depth of approximately eight feet at low tide and offers fuel, utilities and Customs and Immigration services on call. Vessel draft should always be checked against current conditions before arrival.

Nixon's Harbour, near the southern end of South Bimini, is one of the island's recognized cruising anchorages. The anchorage has a predominantly sandy bottom and depths of roughly six to eight feet, but it provides only modest protection and can experience swell when seas arrive from the west. Its shallow approaches make careful depth monitoring particularly important.

Because exposed anchorages around South Bimini can become uncomfortable when conditions deteriorate, many yachts prefer the security of Bimini Cove Resort & Marina for overnight stays. Its enclosed basin offers considerably greater protection than anchoring off the open coastline and provides convenient access to the beaches and attractions of South Bimini.

South Bimini has a noticeably slower pace than North Bimini and remains closely connected to the natural environment surrounding the islands. South Bimini Airport is the main air gateway to Bimini, while a ferry connection allows visitors to cross the harbor to North Bimini and Alice Town.

Among the island's best-known attractions are the Bimini Biological Field Station, the limestone well associated with the legend of the Fountain of Youth and the historic Pirates Well near the western coast. Together with South Bimini's beaches and surrounding dive sites, these locations make the island much more than simply a marina stop on a Bimini yacht charter.
