Andros Island: The Wild Heart of the Bahamas and Its Great Barrier Reef

Andros Island is the largest island in The Bahamas and one of the country's most extraordinary yacht charter destinations. Known locally as the "Big Yard," Andros remains remarkably wild, with vast pine forests, mangrove wetlands, empty beaches and hundreds of miles of waterways separating its northern, central and southern regions. Offshore, the 190-mile Andros Barrier Reef follows the eastern coast beside the deep Tongue of the Ocean, creating exceptional conditions for diving, fishing and underwater exploration.

A yacht charter around Andros is less about fashionable marinas and more about exploring one of the most untouched environments in the Caribbean. The island is famous for its blue holes, bonefish flats and extensive national park system. More than 180 blue holes have been identified across Andros, while West Side National Park alone protects around 1.5 million acres of tidal flats, mangroves and wilderness. The surrounding creeks are also internationally renowned for bonefish, permit and tarpon.

The enormous scale of Andros makes it possible to build very different charter itineraries around the same island. North Andros offers access through Morgan's Bluff and the waters around Nicholls Town, Central Andros includes Fresh Creek, Andros Town and some of the best-known sections of the barrier reef, while Mangrove Cay and South Andros lead into increasingly remote beaches, bights and flats. The North, Middle and South Bights cut completely across Andros, creating a natural maze that is ideally explored with a combination of yacht and shallow-draft tender.

Navigation around Andros varies dramatically depending on which side of the island is being explored. Along the east coast, the Andros Barrier Reef separates the shoreline from the Tongue of the Ocean, where depths plunge to more than 6,000 feet. Reef cuts provide access toward settlements and creeks, but coral heads, shallow patches and strong tidal flow mean approaches should be planned carefully using current charts and good daylight.

The western side of Andros is completely different. Here, vast flats, mangrove channels and extremely shallow water extend across the Great Bahama Bank. Many areas are accessible only to tenders, skiffs and shallow-draft boats. Morgan's Bluff is one of the better-known yacht access points in North Andros, while Fresh Creek provides access to Central Andros. Farther south, entrances through the bights allow adventurous itineraries to reach Mangrove Cay and South Andros. Vessel draft is a major consideration throughout the island, and local knowledge becomes especially valuable when exploring away from the main approaches.

Andros offers numerous potential anchorages, but conditions vary considerably because of the island's size and exposure. Morgan's Bluff is one of the most established cruising stops, with anchoring in approximately seven to nine feet of water and good protection from east-northeast through southwest. It becomes uncomfortable in northerly and westerly conditions, however, so weather should be monitored carefully before using it overnight.

Near Central Andros, Goat Cay outside Fresh Creek offers sandy holding and access to healthy snorkeling reefs within the North Andros Marine Park. Anchoring inside Fresh Creek itself is less attractive because strong reversing currents and scoured bottom can make holding unreliable. Farther south, South Bight offers approximately eight to ten feet of water and useful protection from several directions, giving yachts another option while exploring the central and southern parts of Andros.

Andros is divided into North Andros, Central Andros, Mangrove Cay and South Andros, with creeks and bights making travel by sea particularly important. The island remains one of the great ecotourism destinations of The Bahamas, with Blue Holes National Park protecting roughly 40,000 acres and West Side National Park preserving an immense expanse of wetlands and wildlife habitat. Captain Bill's Blue Hole is among the most accessible of the island's famous inland blue holes.

Andros also has a strong cultural identity. Androsia batik has been produced on the island since the 1970s, while fishing remains central to many local communities. For yacht charter guests, however, the defining attraction is the sheer amount of wilderness. Few major Bahamian islands offer the same combination of barrier reef diving, blue holes, flats fishing, mangrove exploration and almost empty coastline.
