South Andros: Wild Beaches, Blue Holes and the Edge of the Tongue of the Ocean

South Andros is one of the wildest yacht charter destinations in The Bahamas, a sparsely developed region where long white-sand beaches, mangrove creeks, blue holes and enormous bonefish flats stretch far beyond the island's small settlements. Communities including Congo Town, Kemp's Bay, Deep Creek and Mars Bay follow the eastern coastline, while the surrounding waters remain remarkably quiet compared with the country's better-known cruising grounds.

Offshore, the Andros Barrier Reef runs along the eastern side of the island before the seabed plunges into the Tongue of the Ocean, a deep-water canyon reaching roughly 6,000 feet. This dramatic underwater geography creates outstanding conditions for scuba diving, snorkeling and offshore fishing. South Andros is also especially rich in oceanic and inland blue holes, with more than 100 reported in this part of Andros alone.

A South Andros yacht charter is equally rewarding in shallow water. Deep Creek provides access toward the vast western flats, South Bight opens through the island toward the Great Bahama Bank, and Mars Bay marks one of the quietest reaches of the eastern coastline. With few large resorts or developed marinas, South Andros is best suited to charter guests who value fishing, diving, secluded beaches and genuine exploration.

Navigation around South Andros requires careful planning because the environment changes rapidly between deep ocean, coral reef and extremely shallow bank water. Along the eastern coast, yachts cruise beside the Andros Barrier Reef and the Tongue of the Ocean, while reef passages provide access toward settlements including Driggs Hill and Congo Town. Current charts, depth soundings and good daylight are particularly valuable when approaching through reef areas or unfamiliar coastal channels.

South Bight provides one of the most useful natural passages through this part of Andros. Its entrance from the Tongue of the Ocean is comparatively straightforward, but strong reversing currents occur inside the bight and extensive shallows limit how far deeper-draft yachts can continue. Deep Creek and many of the western fishing grounds are better explored by tender or shallow-draft skiff, allowing charter guests to reach mangrove channels and flats that would be inaccessible to the main yacht.

South Bight is one of the most useful established anchorages for yachts exploring South Andros. The anchorage generally has depths of around eight to ten feet with good holding in sand when grassy patches are avoided. It offers protection through a broad range of wind directions, although it is more exposed to the northeast, and strong reversing tidal currents should be considered when setting the anchor.

Elsewhere along South Andros, anchoring is highly dependent on weather, draft and local reef conditions. The eastern coastline offers beautiful daytime stops near secluded beaches, but many positions are exposed to open-ocean swell. Larger yachts often remain in suitable deeper water and use their tenders to reach Mars Bay, Kemp's Bay, Deep Creek and other shallow coastal areas. South Bight is particularly useful because it also provides convenient access to Congo Town Airport and nearby supplies at Driggs Hill.

South Andros remains one of the least developed parts of the country's largest island. South Andros Airport near Congo Town connects the region with Nassau, while small lodges and fishing operations are scattered along the coast. The area is especially famous among fly fishermen, with Deep Creek providing quick access to western flats and extensive habitat for bonefish.

Blue holes add another dimension to the region. Mars Bay Blue Hole becomes especially visible when the sea recedes at low tide, while Stargate Blue Hole near Long Bay Cays is one of South Andros' better-known underwater sites. Combined with the barrier reef, almost empty beaches and enormous mangrove wilderness, these natural features give South Andros one of the strongest ecotourism identities in The Bahamas.
