Peterson Cay: Grand Bahama’s Tiny National Park of Coral Reefs and Turquoise Water

Peterson Cay National Park

Peterson Cay is a charter location in Grand Bahama & Andros, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Peterson Cay Charter Guide

Peterson Cay is a tiny protected island just off the southern coast of Grand Bahama, surrounded by coral reefs and remarkably clear turquoise water. The cay itself covers only about 1.5 acres, making it the smallest national park in The Bahamas, but the protected area extends far beyond the shoreline into the surrounding marine environment. For yacht charter guests cruising from Freeport or Port Lucaya, Peterson Cay offers an easy escape into one of Grand Bahama's most accessible natural marine reserves.

Snorkeling and diving are the main reasons to visit. Four distinct reef zones surround Peterson Cay, supporting coral formations and a wide variety of marine life. Barracuda, rays and colorful reef fish can all be encountered in the area, while excellent snorkeling begins only a short distance from the beach. The cay can only be reached by boat, making it particularly well suited to a Grand Bahama yacht charter itinerary.

Peterson Cay also has important ecological value above the water. The island is internationally recognized as an Important Bird Area and supports a significant nesting colony of Bridled Terns. Combining a small white-sand beach, protected reefs and abundant wildlife within such a compact area, Peterson Cay is an ideal half-day or full-day stop before returning to Port Lucaya or continuing east along Grand Bahama.

Peterson Cay Navigation

Peterson Cay lies approximately one mile off Grand Bahama's southern shoreline and is accessible only by boat. The approach crosses relatively shallow coastal water, with reef formations and coral heads surrounding the cay. Captains should approach in good visibility, use current charts and carefully identify deeper sandy routes rather than navigating directly across reef areas.

There is no marina, dock or conventional harbour at Peterson Cay. Larger charter yachts will generally remain in safe water offshore while guests reach the cay by tender. Because Peterson Cay forms part of a protected national park, extra care should be taken around coral habitat, particularly when maneuvering, anchoring or operating tenders close to shore.

Peterson Cay Anchorage

Peterson Cay is primarily suited to daytime anchoring rather than an overnight yacht stay. The surrounding waters are exposed to changing wind and swell, and coral reef habitat limits the areas where an anchor can be safely placed. Yachts should anchor only over clearly visible sand where permitted, keeping well away from coral formations and other sensitive marine habitat.

Because the national park protects both Peterson Cay and its surrounding marine ecosystem, captains should check current Bahamas National Trust regulations before anchoring. Larger yachts may find it preferable to remain farther offshore and use a tender for beach access, returning to the more protected marina facilities around Port Lucaya for the night.

Peterson Cay General Information

Peterson Cay National Park was established in 1968 and later expanded to protect a much larger area of surrounding marine habitat. The park protects coral reefs, seabird nesting grounds and other marine ecosystems, while a coral nursery southwest of the cay has been used to grow threatened elkhorn and staghorn corals. Fishing and other extractive activities around the cay have long been restricted as part of its protected status.

There is almost no infrastructure on Peterson Cay, which is part of its appeal. Visitors come for swimming, snorkeling, diving, birdlife and the simplicity of spending a few hours on a tiny Bahamian island surrounded by reef. For yacht charter guests staying around Freeport or Port Lucaya, it is one of the easiest ways to experience Grand Bahama's underwater environment without making a long passage.
