North Andros: Blue Holes, Bonefish Flats and the Wild Northern Bahamas

North Andros is a vast, lightly developed yacht charter destination where turquoise flats, mangrove creeks, blue holes and the immense Andros Barrier Reef define the landscape. Far removed from the busier cruising grounds around Nassau and the Exumas, this northern part of Andros offers a more adventurous style of Bahamas yacht charter, with secluded coastlines, extraordinary fishing grounds and small settlements scattered along the eastern shore.

The region is particularly famous for its natural environment. North Andros is home to Blue Holes National Park, a protected area of roughly 40,000 acres containing numerous inland blue holes surrounded by pine and coppice forest. Captain Bill's Blue Hole is one of the best-known, while Uncle Charlie's Blue Hole near Nicholls Town reaches a reported maximum depth of 417 feet. Offshore, the 190-mile Andros Barrier Reef follows the island's eastern coast before the seabed plunges dramatically into the Tongue of the Ocean.

For yacht charter guests, North Andros offers an appealing mix of cruising and exploration. Morgan's Bluff provides one of the most useful yacht access points in the north, Nicholls Town offers a glimpse of traditional island life, and the surrounding flats are internationally known for bonefishing. Farther north, the Joulter Cays open onto an extraordinary world of sandbanks, shallow water and remote beaches, making North Andros especially rewarding for yachts carrying tenders, paddleboards and fishing equipment.

Navigation around North Andros varies considerably between the eastern coastline and the vast shallow banks to the west and north. The Andros Barrier Reef parallels much of the eastern shore, so yachts approaching settlements and harbours must use established reef passages while remaining alert to coral heads, shoals and tidal currents. Good daylight is particularly valuable when reading water depth and identifying safe sandy routes through the typically clear Bahamian water.

Morgan's Bluff is one of the principal cruising entrances to North Andros and provides access to Nicholls Town and the northern road network. Away from the main harbour, much of North Andros becomes shallow very quickly. The creeks, flats and waters around the Joulter Cays are generally better explored by tender or shallow-draft skiff, particularly for deeper-draft motor yachts. North Andros is separated from Central Andros by creeks and flats rich in bonefish, reinforcing the importance of careful route planning when cruising south.

Morgan's Bluff is the best-known anchorage in North Andros and offers approximately seven to nine feet of water in the established anchoring area. Protection is generally good from east-northeast through southwest, but the harbour becomes exposed when winds shift toward the north or west. Holding varies between sand, grass and harder bottom, so captains should ensure the anchor is securely set and remain clear of the commercial and government dock approaches.

Nicholls Town also has an anchoring area a short distance south of Morgan's Bluff, giving yachts another option when exploring the northern settlements. More remote anchorages can be found along the eastern coastline and around the northern cays, but these are highly dependent on draft, sea state and wind direction. Larger charter yachts will often anchor in suitable deeper water and use their tender to explore beaches, creeks and shallow flats closer to shore.

Nicholls Town is one of the principal communities in North Andros, while San Andros Airport provides domestic flights and international charter access just outside the settlement. The region remains sparsely developed compared with Nassau, Freeport or many of the better-known Bahamian islands, giving it a distinctly authentic Out Island character.

North Andros is particularly attractive to yacht charter guests interested in nature, diving and fishing. The barrier reef, blue holes, mangrove systems and enormous bonefish flats create an unusually diverse environment, while the relatively low level of development means that secluded beaches and quiet stretches of coastline remain easy to find.
