West End: Grand Bahama's Gateway Across the Gulf Stream

West End occupies the westernmost tip of Grand Bahama Island, facing directly toward the Florida coast across the Gulf Stream. Located only about 55 nautical miles from Florida, it is one of the closest Bahamian destinations to the United States and has long served as a natural first port of call for yachts crossing from South Florida. For charter guests, West End combines easy access with the slower pace and clear turquoise water of the Bahamian Out Islands.

The settlement itself is the oldest on Grand Bahama Island. Its history stretches from fishing and maritime trade to Civil War era smuggling and Prohibition rum running, giving West End a character very different from the more modern development around Freeport and Port Lucaya. Today, colorful homes, fishing boats and quiet waterfront roads preserve much of that traditional atmosphere.

For yacht charter guests, West End is both a destination and a gateway. Old Bahama Bay provides resort and marina facilities at the tip of the island, while surrounding waters offer exceptional fishing, snorkeling and diving. From here, yachts can continue east along Grand Bahama toward Freeport, Peterson Cay and East End, head north onto the Little Bahama Bank, or use West End as the beginning or final stop of a wider Bahamas yacht charter.

West End is particularly convenient for yachts arriving directly from Florida. Old Bahama Bay Marina lies approximately 56 miles from the Florida coast and operates as an official port of entry, with Bahamas Customs and Immigration available on site. The marina has 63 slips and reports a controlling depth of eight feet at mean low tide, making it suitable for many cruising yachts while still requiring deeper-draft vessels to confirm conditions before arrival.

Navigation becomes more demanding outside the marina. The waters around the western tip of Grand Bahama transition between the Gulf Stream, reefs and the shallow Little Bahama Bank, while an uncharted shoal has also been reported near Indian Cay Channel. Captains should use current charts, local notices and depth soundings when approaching West End or continuing onto the banks.

An anchorage is available northeast and east of the entrance to Old Bahama Bay Marina, generally in approximately six to nine feet of water. The usable sandy area is more limited than the surrounding expanse of water suggests, and large grass patches should be avoided when setting the anchor. Strong currents and exposure to northerly weather make this anchorage best suited to settled conditions rather than as a dependable all-weather stop.

A more protected option lies southeast of West End at Ginn Sur Mer. Its large man-made canal and basin offer good holding in sand and protection from all directions, making it one of the most sheltered anchoring areas around western Grand Bahama. For charter yachts seeking full services, however, Old Bahama Bay remains the most convenient choice for an overnight stay.

West End has deep roots in Bahamian maritime culture and remains closely associated with fishing. The surrounding waters are particularly renowned for bonefishing and offshore big game fishing, while deep water lies remarkably close to parts of the coast. Old Bahama Bay is the area's principal yacht-oriented resort, offering a full-service marina, beaches, restaurants and water sports.
