Congo Town: Bonefish Flats and the Quiet Gateway to South Andros

Congo Town is a small coastal settlement in South Andros, surrounded by bonefish flats, mangrove waterways and the wild landscapes that define the southern end of Andros Island. Far removed from the busy marinas and resorts found elsewhere in The Bahamas, it offers yacht charter guests a quiet base for discovering one of the country's least developed cruising regions. South Andros Airport lies nearby, making Congo Town particularly convenient for guests joining or leaving a yacht charter in this remote part of the island.

The sea is the main attraction here. Vast shallow flats extend through South Andros and into a labyrinth of tidal creeks and mangrove islands, creating exceptional habitat for bonefish. Offshore, the Andros Barrier Reef separates the coast from the deep Tongue of the Ocean, giving charter guests access to reef snorkeling, diving and offshore fishing within the same cruising area.

Congo Town also provides a useful starting point for exploring the rest of South Andros. Driggs Hill and South Bight lie to the north, while Kemp's Bay, Deep Creek and Mars Bay extend south along the coast. Rather than functioning as a conventional resort destination, Congo Town is best experienced as part of a wider South Andros yacht charter focused on fishing, beaches, blue holes and exploration by tender.

The waters around Congo Town require careful navigation because shallow flats and reef structures dominate much of South Andros. Larger yachts generally remain in suitable deeper water offshore or use the South Bight area, while tenders and shallow-draft skiffs are ideal for exploring the creeks, fishing flats and coastal shallows. Good daylight, current charts and careful depth monitoring are important whenever leaving established routes.

Driggs Hill, a short distance north of Congo Town, serves as the main commercial and recreational harbour for South Andros and provides the most practical nearby landing point for many visiting vessels. South Bight is also particularly useful because its anchorage lies close to Congo Town Airport, allowing charter guests or crew to transfer relatively easily between yacht and aircraft. Strong reversing tidal currents occur within the bight, so captains should account for both tide and vessel swing when entering or anchoring.

Congo Town itself is not known for a conventional protected yacht marina, so visiting yachts generally use nearby South Bight or select suitable offshore positions according to draft and weather. South Bight provides one of the most useful established anchorages in the area, with good holding in sand when grassy patches are avoided. Protection is strongest from easterly through northwesterly directions, although strong reversing currents make generous scope important.

The anchorage is also useful for shore access. Driggs Hill lies on the southern side of the bight, with basic supplies available nearby, and the area is the closest established anchorage to South Andros Airport. Yachts continuing farther south can find additional stopping opportunities around Kemp's Bay, Deep Creek and Mars Bay, although many coastal positions remain exposed and should only be used in appropriate weather.

Congo Town is one of the small communities lining the eastern coast of South Andros and is served by nearby South Andros Airport, also commonly referred to as Congo Town Airport. The settlement remains quiet and lightly developed, with Queen's Highway providing the main road connection north toward Driggs Hill and south through Kemp's Bay, Deep Creek and Mars Bay.

Local life remains strongly connected to the surrounding environment, particularly fishing and the sea. Congo Town is also home to Gibson's Indoor Straw Market, where locally made straw work, shell jewelry and Bahamian crafts can be found. For charter guests, however, the greatest appeal lies beyond the settlement itself in the bonefish flats, reef waters and almost untouched coastline of South Andros.
