Fresh Creek & Andros Town: Central Andros’ Gateway to the Barrier Reef
Fresh Creek & Andros Town is a charter location in Grand Bahama & Andros, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Fresh Creek & Andros Town Charter Guide
Fresh Creek and Andros Town form the principal gateway to Central Andros, where a broad tidal creek cuts through the eastern coastline and opens toward the immense Andros Barrier Reef. For yacht charter guests, the area combines practical access ashore with diving, fishing, secluded beaches and the wild interior landscapes that make Andros unlike almost anywhere else in The Bahamas.
Just offshore, the Andros Barrier Reef follows the island's eastern coast beside the Tongue of the Ocean, creating extraordinary conditions for scuba diving and snorkeling. The reef extends for roughly 190 miles before dropping into depths exceeding 6,000 feet, while the surrounding creeks, flats and mangrove cays are renowned for bonefish, permit and tarpon.
Fresh Creek also places charter guests close to some of Central Andros' best-known attractions ashore. Small Hope Bay lies along the coast, Captain Bill's Blue Hole can be visited inland near Love Hill, and the Androsia Hand Made Batik Factory in Andros Town has produced its distinctive Bahamian fabrics since 1973. This mix of reef adventure, island culture and natural scenery makes Fresh Creek an excellent base for exploring Central Andros by yacht.
Fresh Creek & Andros Town Navigation
Fresh Creek enters Andros from the east between Andros Town and Coakley Town, providing one of the most useful yacht access routes in Central Andros. Approaching from offshore requires careful passage through the surrounding reef system, where coral heads and shallower sections make current charts, depth monitoring and good daylight particularly important. The creek itself is tidal, and currents can become strong as water moves between the ocean and Andros' interior waterways.
Once inside Fresh Creek, conditions become more protected from wind, although reversing tidal currents can approach three knots at maximum ebb. Yachts should allow for the current when maneuvering near docks or selecting a stopping position. The surrounding shallow creeks and flats are generally better explored by tender or shallow-draft skiff, while deeper-draft yachts should remain within established navigable water.
Fresh Creek & Andros Town Anchorage
Anchoring inside Fresh Creek is possible but generally not recommended as the first choice for visiting yachts. The bottom is heavily scoured, good sandy patches are limited and the strong reversing current can cause an anchor to drag when the tide changes. Waterway Guide reports typical depths of roughly six to nine feet and recommends the Government Dock when suitable space is available rather than relying on the inner anchorage overnight.
A more attractive option lies outside the creek near Goat Cay, where yachts can anchor close to the reef and use a tender to reach Fresh Creek and Andros Town. This also places guests closer to snorkeling and diving areas while avoiding some of the strongest current inside the creek. Anchorage selection should always account for wind direction, swell, vessel draft and the condition of the sandy bottom.
Fresh Creek & Andros Town General Information
Fresh Creek is the largest settlement area in Central Andros and is served by Andros Town International Airport, also commonly known as Fresh Creek Airport. The area remains small and relaxed compared with Nassau or Freeport, but it provides useful services for yacht guests and serves as a natural starting point for exploring the central portion of the island.
One of its most distinctive cultural attractions is the Androsia Hand Made Batik Factory. Located in Andros Town near the lighthouse, the factory produces hand-dyed cotton fabrics inspired by Bahamian landscapes and culture, and visitors can tour the facility or arrange batik lessons. Small Hope Bay nearby adds another connection to the sea, having operated as an Andros diving destination since 1960.
