Morgan's Bluff: North Andros' Historic Harbour and Pirate Coast

Morgan's Bluff sits at the northern tip of Andros, where a protected harbour, crescent beach and rugged limestone headland meet the deep blue waters north of the island. Morgan's Bluff has a spacious anchorage with typical charted depths of approximately seven to nine feet. Protection is generally strongest from east-northeast through southwest, making it a useful stop during prevailing easterly conditions. Holding can vary between sand, grass and harder bottom, however, so captains should confirm that the anchor has set securely before leaving the yacht unattended.

The harbour becomes considerably less comfortable when winds arrive from the north or northwest, with swell and confused seas capable of entering the anchorage. Recent cruiser reports also emphasize keeping well clear of the Government Dock approach because large cargo vessels use the channel. In unsuitable weather, yachts should reassess the anchorage rather than treating Morgan's Bluff as an all-weather refuge.

Morgan's Bluff combines maritime importance with some of North Andros' most recognizable local landmarks. Morgan's Bluff Beach curves alongside the harbour, while nearby Morgan's Cave and the limestone headland preserve the area's long-standing pirate legends. Regatta Village beside the beach also becomes a gathering place during local events, including the All Andros and Berry Islands Regatta.

The harbour remains refreshingly informal compared with the resort marinas found elsewhere in The Bahamas.
