Cambridge Cay Yacht Charter: Reefs, Caves & Pristine Exuma Waters

Cambridge Cay Map

Cambridge Cay is a charter location in The Exumas, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.

Cambridge Cay Charter Guide

Located in the southern reaches of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, Cambridge Cay is one of the most rewarding wilderness stops on an Exumas yacht charter. The unspoiled cay is surrounded by luminous shallows, protected reefs, white-sand beaches, and a secure mooring field, with virtually no development to interrupt the landscape.

What makes Cambridge Cay especially valuable is its position beside some of the park's finest snorkeling and natural attractions. From the yacht, guests can travel by tender to the Sea Aquarium at O'Brien's Cay, the limestone caves of Rocky Dundas, coral gardens, and numerous shallow reefs, all within a relatively compact cruising area.

The cay itself is equally appealing ashore. Hiking trails cross the island toward quiet eastern beaches and elevated viewpoints, while the surrounding sandbanks create extraordinary contrasts between pale turquoise flats and the deep blue water of Exuma Sound. Cambridge Cay is ideal for guests who want several days of swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and tender exploration without needing restaurants, shops, or conventional shoreside entertainment.

Cambridge Cay Navigation

Cambridge Cay lies within a complex section of the Exuma Cays where shallow banks, narrow passages, strong tidal currents, and scattered coral require careful navigation. The main yacht mooring area sits west of Cambridge Cay between several neighboring islands, providing good shelter once inside, but captains should approach using current charts, tide information, visual navigation, and local knowledge.

Tidal flow is particularly important throughout the area. Currents can become strong not only around the mooring field but also at popular snorkeling sites such as the Sea Aquarium and Rocky Dundas. Bahamas cruising guidance recommends exploring many of these reefs around slack tide, when current conditions are safer and more comfortable for swimmers and snorkelers.

Cambridge Cay Anchorage

The principal overnight option is the Cambridge Cay Mooring Field, managed as part of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park. Waterway Guide currently lists 14 moorings and describes the field as offering good protection from all directions. Strong tidal flow can still cause vessels to lie to the current rather than the wind, sometimes creating rolling or unusual swinging patterns.

Anchoring is permitted outside the mooring field, particularly to the south, where sandy bottom can provide good holding. However, swinging room is limited and currents can be strong, so yachts should remain well clear of the moorings and surrounding shallows. Mooring and anchoring fees apply within the park, and availability is generally not reservable in advance.

Cambridge Cay General Information

Cambridge Cay is undeveloped and accessible primarily by boat, with no marina, restaurants, shops, fuel, or provisioning facilities. Its appeal comes almost entirely from the protected marine environment surrounding it. The Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park is a no-take marine reserve, so fishing, conching, shelling, and removal of marine life are prohibited.

The area is particularly famous for snorkeling. The Sea Aquarium contains exceptionally dense tropical fish and coral life, while Rocky Dundas features dramatic limestone caves with stalactites, stalagmites, and underwater entrances. Both are easily explored by tender from Cambridge Cay when sea and tidal conditions are suitable.
