George Town Yacht Charter: Elizabeth Harbour & the Heart of Great Exuma

Set on the eastern coast of Great Exuma, George Town is the principal settlement and yachting hub of the southern Exumas. The town sits directly on Elizabeth Harbour, a vast natural harbour protected from Exuma Sound by Stocking Island and renowned for its turquoise water, sheltered cruising, and long-established boating community.

For yacht charter guests, George Town provides a welcome combination of island life and practical infrastructure. Take the tender ashore for groceries, restaurants, local crafts, and supplies, explore the streets surrounding Lake Victoria, or cross the harbour toward Stocking Island for beaches, snorkeling, hiking, and waterfront dining. Few locations farther north in the Exumas offer the same concentration of useful shoreside services.

George Town is also an excellent embarkation point for exploring the southern Exumas and the wider island chain. From Elizabeth Harbour, yachts can cruise north toward Lee Stocking Island, Little Farmer's Cay, Staniel Cay, and the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, or venture south and east toward Little Exuma, Long Island, and the more remote Out Islands.

George Town lies along the western side of Elizabeth Harbour, with Stocking Island creating a natural barrier between the harbour and the open waters of Exuma Sound. Several entrances provide access to the harbour, but reefs, sandbanks, shallow flats, and coral heads make careful navigation essential. Captains should use current charts, visual navigation, weather conditions, tide information, and local knowledge when approaching.

Once inside Elizabeth Harbour, yachts have considerable room to maneuver, although shallow areas extend around Stocking Island, Crab Cay, February Point, and the southern harbour. Access directly into downtown George Town is generally made by tender through the narrow channel into Lake Victoria, where a dinghy dock provides convenient access to shops and services.

Elizabeth Harbour provides numerous anchoring options, making George Town one of the most important cruising bases in the southern Bahamas. Yachts can choose positions according to wind direction, desired protection, draft, and proximity to town or Stocking Island. The harbour is particularly valued for the protection provided by Stocking Island from the open waters of Exuma Sound.

For convenient access to George Town, Kidd Cove is the closest anchorage to the tender channel leading into Lake Victoria, with approximately 4 to 9 feet of water and excellent holding over sand and grass. Farther south, Crab Cay offers approximately 10 to 15 feet of water in its northern bay and can provide useful protection during passing cold fronts.

George Town is the administrative and commercial center of the Exumas, with grocery stores, restaurants, government services, shops, yacht facilities, fuel, and local markets concentrated around the waterfront. Lake Victoria sits directly behind the town center and connects to Elizabeth Harbour through a small canal, allowing yacht guests to arrive almost directly in the heart of town by tender.

One of the best places to experience local culture is the Exuma Straw Market, where artisans sell woven straw products, jewelry, clothing, souvenirs, and locally made goods. George Town is also closely associated with Bahamian sailing culture and hosts the National Family Island Regatta, which brings traditional racing sloops from across the Bahamas to Elizabeth Harbour.
