Pipe Cay & Pipe Creek Yacht Charter: Sandbars & Turquoise Channels in the Exumas

Located between Compass Cay and Staniel Cay, Pipe Cay & Pipe Creek form one of the most visually spectacular cruising areas in the central Exumas. A maze of small islands, brilliant turquoise channels, exposed sandbanks, and shallow flats creates the kind of landscape that has made the Exumas famous from the air.

Pipe Creek is not a conventional resort or marina destination. Its appeal comes from exploring the waterways themselves, preferably by tender, kayak, or paddleboard. At low tide, enormous white-sand flats emerge from the surrounding water, while deeper blue channels snake between Pipe Cay, Little Pipe Cay, Thomas Cay, Joe Cay, Overyonder Cay, and the surrounding islands.

For yacht charter guests, this is one of the best places in the Exumas to slow down and spend an entire day exploring. Anchor the yacht nearby, launch the tender into the shallows, walk across an exposed sandbar, snorkel around small reefs, and watch the colors of Pipe Creek transform continuously as the tide rises and falls.

Navigating Pipe Creek requires considerable care. Shifting sandbars, extremely shallow flats, narrow channels, rocky ledges, and strong reversing tidal currents make this one of the more technically demanding cruising areas in the Exumas. Larger yachts generally remain in deeper surrounding water while guests explore the interior by tender.

Several entrances lead into the creek system, but depths and currents vary significantly with the tide. The narrow channels can become particularly fast-flowing during peak tidal movement, so experienced captains commonly time movements carefully and rely on current charts, visual navigation, and local knowledge. The famous Pipe Creek Sandbar itself is best approached by small boat because much of the surrounding area is too shallow for larger vessels.

One of the principal anchoring areas lies at the southern end of Pipe Cay near Little Pipe Cay, where depths are approximately 8 to 12 feet over predominantly deep sand. The anchorage offers good protection from most directions, but strong reversing currents run through the gap and can cause yachts to swing through a full 360 degrees as the tide changes.

Another option is Pipe Creek North, where depths are approximately 8 to 15 feet near a large drying sandbar between Compass Cay and Pipe Cay. The sandbar provides substantial protection at lower stages of the tide, although swell can enter from Exuma Sound at high water when winds have a strong northeasterly component. Larger yachts may also anchor outside the Pipe Cay channel and explore the creek by tender.

Pipe Creek is best understood as a natural cruising playground rather than a developed destination. The area consists of Pipe Cay and numerous neighboring islands and sandbanks, including Little Pipe Cay, Thomas Cay, Joe Cay, Overyonder Cay, and several smaller cayes. There are few conventional visitor facilities, making the yacht itself the center of the experience.

Pipe Cay also contains the remains of a historic Decca navigation station, part of the radio-navigation system used before modern satellite GPS. The abandoned site adds an unusual historical element to an area otherwise dominated almost completely by water, sand, and undeveloped island scenery.
