Rudder Cut Cay Yacht Charter: Underwater Art, Caves & Secluded Exumas
Rudder Cut Cay is a charter location in The Exumas, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Rudder Cut Cay Charter Guide
Located in the central Exumas between Cave Cay and the waters surrounding Musha Cay, Rudder Cut Cay is an exceptionally secluded yacht charter destination known for dramatic limestone scenery, brilliant sandbanks, underwater attractions, and quiet anchorages. With no public settlement or conventional tourism infrastructure, the experience here revolves almost entirely around the sea.
Its most unusual attraction lies beneath the surface. Just offshore is The Musician, the famous underwater installation depicting a life-sized mermaid beside a grand piano. Resting in shallow, clear water, the sculpture has gradually become part of the surrounding marine environment and is now one of the most distinctive snorkeling and freediving experiences in the Exumas.
Above water, Rudder Cut Cay offers secluded beaches, rocky caves, tidal sandbars, and remarkably empty surroundings. The cay is particularly rewarding for yachts equipped with tenders, paddleboards, snorkeling gear, and other water toys, allowing guests to spend the day exploring before returning to an anchorage that can feel far removed from the busier central Exumas.
Rudder Cut Cay Navigation
Rudder Cut, at the southern end of the cay, provides a passage between Exuma Sound and the shallow Exuma Bank. The cut itself is navigable, but strong tidal current can develop through it, especially when wind opposes the tide. A small cay and several prominent rocks lie around the passage, so captains should use current charts, tide information, visual navigation, and local knowledge when approaching.
The inside route north toward Musha Cay and Cave Cay is considerably shallower. Cruising guidance reports a controlling depth of around 1.4 metres on parts of this bank-side passage, making it appropriate primarily for shallower-draft vessels and preferably near higher water. Deeper-draft yachts can instead use Rudder Cut from Exuma Sound to reach suitable anchorages on the western side of the cay.
Rudder Cut Cay Anchorage
Several anchoring options exist along the western and northern sides of Rudder Cut Cay. Rudder Cay North offers approximately 6 to 8 feet of water in a bay partially protected by nearby Jimmy's Cay. It can be a peaceful overnight anchorage in settled conditions, although surge may develop as winds increase and the anchorage remains exposed from the south and southwest.
Farther south, the Rudder Cay Cave anchorage carries approximately 9 to 11 feet and provides convenient tender access to the cay's caves and underwater piano. Holding varies between sand and grass, and the area can become rolly when conditions turn southeasterly. Strong current associated with Rudder Cut is another factor when selecting the safest overnight position.
Rudder Cut Cay General Information
Rudder Cut Cay is privately owned and uninhabited, and shore access should not be assumed simply because a yacht is anchored nearby. The cay contains a private airstrip associated with neighboring Musha Cay, while conventional facilities such as restaurants, shops, fuel, and public marina services are absent.
For yacht guests, the surrounding water is the main attraction. Snorkeling the underwater piano, exploring the rock caves by tender, walking exposed sandbars where permitted, and enjoying the remarkably clear shallows make Rudder Cut Cay a particularly memorable wilderness stop between the central and southern Exumas.
