Shroud Cay Yacht Charter: Mangrove Creeks & Pristine Exumas
Shroud Cay is a charter location in The Exumas, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Shroud Cay Charter Guide
Located at the northern end of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, Shroud Cay is one of the most pristine and unusual destinations in the Exumas. Rather than marinas or settlements, the uninhabited cay is defined by white-sand beaches, expansive tidal flats, dense mangroves, and a remarkable network of saltwater creeks winding through its interior.
The signature experience is exploring these waterways by tender, kayak, or paddleboard. Sanctuary Creek crosses the cay from the shallow Exuma Bank toward the deep-blue Exuma Sound, revealing mangrove nurseries, sea turtles, rays, juvenile sharks, and extraordinary contrasts in water color along the way. Timing the journey around the tide is essential because sections of the creek become extremely shallow.
For yacht charter guests, Shroud Cay offers exactly the kind of experience that makes the Exumas exceptional. There are no restaurants, resorts, shops, or nightlife competing for attention. Instead, the day revolves around exploring untouched waterways, swimming from deserted beaches, hiking to panoramic viewpoints, and returning to the yacht surrounded almost entirely by protected wilderness.
Shroud Cay Navigation
Shroud Cay sits between Norman's Cay to the north and the central reaches of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park to the south. Most yachts cruise along its western, Exuma Bank side, where the water is comparatively shallow and visual navigation remains important. Sandbanks and shoaling areas extend around the cay, so captains should use current charts, local knowledge, daylight, tide information, and careful observation of water color when approaching.
The interior creeks are not conventional yacht passages and are best explored with the yacht's tender or non-motorized water toys. Sanctuary Creek in particular should be entered at an appropriate stage of tide, as water depth and current change significantly throughout the day. An experienced crew can time the excursion so guests can comfortably travel through the mangroves and emerge onto the eastern beach facing Exuma Sound.
Shroud Cay Anchorage
Shroud Cay offers several anchoring and mooring possibilities along its western shore. The north anchorage generally has around 6 to 8 feet of water with good holding in sand, but it is best suited to mild easterly conditions and can develop uncomfortable swell as winds strengthen. Shallower-draft vessels may find additional protection closer to the shoreline near Sanctuary Creek.
Farther south, anchoring areas offer deeper water and excellent sandy holding, although exposure to swell remains possible. Mooring availability within the park can also change, so captains should confirm current Bahamas National Trust arrangements before arrival. As Shroud Cay lies inside the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, visiting yachts are subject to park regulations and applicable anchoring or mooring fees.
Shroud Cay General Information
Shroud Cay is completely uninhabited and protected within the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, one of the Bahamas' most important marine conservation areas. Fishing and removal of marine life are prohibited throughout the park, helping preserve the reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and wildlife surrounding the cay.
One of Shroud Cay's best-known landmarks is Camp Driftwood, a high point above the eastern shore reached from the end of Sanctuary Creek. The site is valued today primarily for its spectacular panoramic views across the mangroves, sand flats, and deep-blue Exuma Sound.
