Staniel Cay Yacht Charter: Thunderball Grotto, Pig Beach & the Central Exumas
Staniel Cay is a charter location in The Exumas, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Staniel Cay Charter Guide
Located near the center of the Exuma Cays, Staniel Cay is one of the most important and recognizable yacht charter destinations in the Bahamas. The island combines spectacular turquoise water and white-sand beaches with a genuine Bahamian settlement, a full-service yacht club, an airport, and immediate access to several of the Exumas' most famous attractions.
Just west of the island lies Thunderball Grotto, the extraordinary underwater cave system made famous by the James Bond film Thunderball. A short tender ride north leads to Big Major Cay and its world-famous swimming pigs, while the surrounding waters are filled with sandbars, reefs, secluded beaches, and smaller islands ideal for exploring by yacht.
Staniel Cay is also one of the best places in the central Exumas to combine remote cruising with practical facilities. Guests can dine or have a drink ashore at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, explore the small village, provision the yacht, refuel, or use the island's airport for guest transfers before continuing north or south through the Exumas.
Staniel Cay Navigation
Staniel Cay is surrounded by the shallow banks, sandbars, rocks, tidal passages, and coral heads characteristic of the central Exumas, so careful visual navigation remains important. Approaches should be planned using current charts, tide information, local knowledge, and good daylight, particularly when moving away from established channels into shallower anchorages or neighboring cayes.
Staniel Cay Yacht Club provides a useful deep-water option for larger yachts. The marina currently states that its docks can accommodate yachts up to 210 feet and drafts up to 12 feet even at low tide, with 18 slips available. The marina monitors VHF Channel 16, and captains should coordinate their approach and berth assignment before entering.
Staniel Cay Anchorage
Staniel Cay offers a combination of marina berths, dedicated moorings, and nearby anchoring opportunities, giving visiting yachts considerably more flexibility than at many smaller Exuma cayes. Staniel Cay Yacht Club currently operates 21 mooring balls close to the marina, installed over a sand-and-grass bottom.
Depth varies throughout the mooring area as vessels swing with wind and tide, so the Yacht Club specifically advises captains to verify the water depth around their assigned mooring. Yachts choosing to anchor instead can find several options around Staniel Cay and neighboring islands, but the captain should select the final position based on draft, tide, wind, current, and swinging room.
Staniel Cay General Information
Staniel Cay has a small permanent Bahamian community of fewer than 90 full-time residents, along with shops, a church, post office, library, marine supplies, restaurants, and the long-established Staniel Cay Yacht Club. The Yacht Club dates to 1956 and today includes accommodation, dining, a marina, fuel, electricity, reverse-osmosis water, and other yacht services.
The island is also unusually accessible for the Exuma Cays. Staniel Cay Airport has a roughly 3,000-foot runway and serves as an official Bahamian Port of Entry, making it possible for charter guests to join or leave a yacht directly in the central Exumas rather than returning to Nassau or Great Exuma.
